Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS): How do you manage it?

Posted by Barb @amberpep, Oct 30, 2019

I just had a colonoscopy 2 months ago so I know there's nothing really wrong. But everytime I get overly stressed I wind up with what I think is Irritable Bowel Syndrome. I get diahrea, abdominal pain - gas like - and when it hits, I've got to get to the bathroom pronto! I usually don't go anywhere on those days. It only lasts about a half day or a day, but on those days I wear a Depends, just in case I don't make it. After the spell is over, my abdomon feels as though it's been purged. I do have Bipolar 2, and when stress hits, this is how it manifests itself. I usually take Immodium - I only need 1 or 2, but it really leaves me dragging. I just want to lay down and sleep.
Any suggestions on anything else to do besides what I'm doing?

I am at a loss as what to do anymore. Had diarhea once a week for the last 4 weeks. At my wits end. Began Probiotics (Align) as my Gastroenterologist prescribed for me. Been on it for 3 days. Today I had a bad episode? HELP

Fit, do you know what brought on your bad case of IBS? What have you tried so far to control the symptoms?

I have started taking Align on Tuesday. Hoping it helps. Gastroenterologist ordered that. I also take 2 Colestipol tablets every day which was prescribed about 4 years ago. Last month I had weekly severe diarhhea episodes.

my husband tried align for weeks and it does not help. tried Beano and he showed blood and doctor said to stop that.

Oh, I am sorry to hear that, I was hoping it works. Anyone else have any ideas?

I use Beano with good luck. Why do you think he had blood?

he saw blood and told doctor and doctor told him to stop Beano.

Hi @amberpep - first- great that you had a good colonoscopy! I understand fully what you are going through with the IBS attacks. Stress is hard to avoid. I have lived with this for years. Imodium is good to take before you leave the house. I agree with Depends for emergencies- you are not alone! I also take PeptoBismol those days in addition to an antispasmodic, like Bentyl. Helps with cramps. If I’m home, I’ll nap a lot. When I sleep, my intestines sleep too. I always have PeptoBismol and Bentyl in my purse. Let’s see if other members have additional tips!

I went to a gluten free diet first, then the anti inflammatory diet as well. It took a little time to figure out my trigger foods. Stress is a Hugh factor I have found. I take the over the counter anti diarrhea pills when in doubt. Have them with me at all times. A heating pad is my friend.

I understand what Irritable bowel syndrome is I have it.I have adrenaleukodystrophy and that is one of the many problems. When I stress my ibs acts up. I am living on Bentyl and Imodium. I am always prepared never know. I have cramps when this happens and just want to be in bed with a heating pad.I also noticed eating certain foods it also triggers it. My friends don't understand. If you can ask your Dr for Bentyl it does ease it.

If you have problems with dairy, read labels on probiotics. Many contain milk.
