Night sweats- 23 yr old female. Test/specialist suggestions?

Posted by sonya_nc @sonya_nc, Oct 29, 2019

My 23 year old has night sweats EVERY night- often multiple rounds. While this began several years ago, it was episodic and not every night and not to the point of having to shower/change pj's and bedding like now.

Her endocrinologist, who follows her for thyroid nodules (with ultrasound and biopsies), has ordered many labs which all return in normal ranges. We have discussed this with several physicians who all express concern and often remark this "could indicate cancer"- terrifying my daughter; then they order labs which come back normal and everyone moves on except my daughter who continues to experience this escalating occurrence.

Her ongoing meds include birth control pills (she takes back to back to prevent periods), anti depression rx and vitamins (D, B12, iron). Other health issues (in addition to the thyroid nodules and night sweats): extreme fatigue/depression/ joint aches/ excessive thirst/ sleep issues.

Who should we turn to? hematology/ infectious disease/ another endocrinologist?? Which labs/tests should we request?

We appreciate any ideas.

Thanks. Hormone levels were tested by Endo. We were told the results were consistent with levels of someone on birth control pills.

I tend to be highly sensitive to medications and need to be started out on lower than what is considered normal levels. Just a thought. Hope appointment goes well.

@philip62 if the Dr. doesn’t think your symptoms are a thyroid issue, what does h/she think it is? Why was the radioactive iodine treatment prescribed?

I had overactive thyroid (Graves Disease, Hyperthyroidism). It was treated with a medication called Methimazole, I think. I always thought that radioactive iodine treatment would completely obliterate thyroid function. Is that not true? What does your consultant think is causing your sickness and night sweats? Has any treatment been offered to you that may help?

I would have her blood sugar, thyroid hormone, and insulin levels checked. Could be completely unrelated, but I experienced major problems from taking birth control pills with my thyroid medication will having hashimoto's. Sweating, and peeing a lot can be signs of diabetes. Diabetes and thyroid disease are closely connected. And, birth control pills can increase the amount of sugar in your bloodstream.

If you're getting radioactive iodine treatment it definitely is a thyroid issue. That means you're being treated for hyperthyroidism.

He says he doesn’t know what is making me sick. I was on Victoza and that has been stopped but i’m still sick. My medication sent my liver functions sky high so this is the only treatment i can have apart from surgery
