If you've had IVIG's at Mayo, did your insurance pay for them?

I've had at least 10 IVIG's. To make a long story short, Mayo does not do a good job from an insurance standpoint regarding them. I don't blame the Mayo physicians. I actually blame Mayo for not employing more people in Patient Billing. There's not enough room here for me to explain what I'm referring to. Just know that if you're going to get an IVIG at Mayo, you can expect to pay 50% to 100% of the thousands of dollars in charges. If you complain, Patient Account Services will just tell you that no patient is allowed to contact Mayo's Patient Billing department, and that therefore, it's the responsibility of the patient to file claims with the insurance carrier. That's all I'm going to say on this matter. 🙂

@sofaramnotdead, I would think (but don't know) that coverage is dependent on a) the type of insurance one has and b) the condition for which one is receiving IVIg. Your warning to others that they do their due diligence and find out about cost and reimbursement when considering IVIg therapy is well pointed. Thank you.

I had two IVIG infusions at Mayo Rochester before I could get the approval locally (I'm in Michigan). Both were fully covered. I have Medicare and a Blue Care Network medigap policy. The cost (like everything medical) is daunting, so I wish you luck. These infusions have made a huge difference in my health.
