Skin rash and pain

Posted by martinsmckinney @martinsmckinney, Oct 15, 2019

Hello Everyone, Was diagnosed earlier this year with Idiopathic Small Fiber Nephropathy, confirmed with the skin/nerve test on my right leg. Curious to know if any one is experiencing a red rash on arms, legs and chest? it is itchy, and painful.

I also get the pins and needles sensation when i start exercising. it is very uncomfortable but does not occur every day. Does that occur for others?

Thank you in advance!

Hello @martinsmckinney, Welcome to Connect. There are 2 medical terms that often get confused because they sound almost the same and look similar: neuropathy and nephropathy.

NEUROpathy is a result of damage to the nerves (neuro) outside of the brain and spinal cord (peripheral nerves)
NEPHRopathy means kidney disease or damage (nephro).

To help me connect you to other members like you, can you tell me if you have neuropathy or nephropathy?

REPLY

Thanks for the guidance John. Actually it is the nerve issue, not kidney.

I also found an article from Medical News Today -- What is causing my rash? that may help provide more information on the type of rash.

Have you mentioned your symptoms to your doctor?

My Neurologist is aware of the symptoms admitting he has not seen a similar rash with other Neuropathy patients. He recommended I contact Mayo for a broader evaluation. I have been to several Dermatologists, Allergists for the past several years. Despite biopsies and tests, no one has been able to understand what is going on with my skin.

@martinsmckinney, If you would like to seek help from Mayo Clinic, contact one of the appointment offices. The
contact information for Minnesota, Arizona and Florida can be found here http://mayocl.in/1mtmR63. Can your neurologist give you a referral to Mayo Clinic? I think that may help.

Hi, @martinsmckinney - I'd like to invite @artscaping @tdemaria @cbrackle @sherlock @aeg73 to add any thoughts they may have about your idiopathic small fiber neuropathy and the red, painful and itchy rash you are experiencing on your arms, legs and chest, along with the pins and needles sensation when you start exercising.

I'm sorry but I don't have a Neuropathy diagnosis, they are leaning towards Lyme related illness/disease due to my symptoms. It appears that Neuropathy symptoms go along with many other things. Could it be plaque psoriasis or shingles (painful part)? I hope you get some answers.

are you currently taking gabapentin? I developed hives on different parts of my body initially which took a few months to taper off and eventually go away. They were itchy but did not hurt. A friend also broke out in hives when he was prescribed gaba for back pain.

Thank you aeg73. I've had shingles and they ruled out psoriasis, so far. My wife has Lyme. It effects everyone differently.

Thank you @helenniola I started taking Pregabalin this summer to fight off the pins and needles feelings. The rash has been around for several years and has progressed from my legs to arms then chest and remains in those areas.
