Severe Pain after 2nd TKR

Posted by ssbionicknee @ssbionicknee, Sep 8, 2019

I had a right TKR in May of 2018 and it was painful, but tolerable. Physical Therapy seemed to go fairly smoothly. In August of 2019, I had my left TKR and am having a horrible time controlling the pain and Physical therapy is not going near as smoothly. I went to PT last Friday and was in extreme pain afterward. I was up all night. I had sharp pains inside the wound, extreme sensitivity to touch on the inside of my knee, what felt like spasms in the back of the knee and the knee was very sensitive to anything touching it. I had to keep it still and iced all day Saturday in order to get the pain under control. I know I need to do my exercises, but am afraid of triggering the pain again. I have heard that no 2 knee replacements are the same, but this one seems to be really bad. Is this normal? I have to find a happy medium when doing physical therapy. Any thoughts or suggestions?

I live in Scotland and we are in the middle of the COVID Pandemic. Unless it is a matter of life and death it is difficult to get a face to face consultation. People with cancer can not even get a follow up. In normal circumstances I would have been having a follow up with my Consultant who did my TKR. I don’t think that will happen while the pandemic is prevalent.

Hello @auxiliary, Welcome to Connect. I'm sorry to hear you have not been able to get any relief from the pain. I know I don't like the let's wait and see answer from doctors either. If it were me and I was having severe pain after falling and it keeps getting worse, I would request that my doctor setup an X-ray and possibly MRI. Here's an article that discusses the topic.

8 Most Common Knee Injuries from Falling: https://www.healthline.com/health/8-most-common-knee-injuries-from-falling#knee-injuries

If your doctor is not responsive, are you able to seek a second opinion with an orthopedic specialist?

Thank you for your reply. I spoke to my GP today and told her that after so many falls and my TKR regressing I needed to get some answers. She is now referring me back to my Consultant who will probably arrange an MRI. Watch this space.

Check to see exactly what the MRI is for. I went last week (my TKR was 2/10/20) and they cannot see anything on an MRI after TKR. Just trying to save you some money and an unnecessary trip.

I live in Scotland so we have National Health Service which we do not pay for. I have had so many falls on my TKR. This was a revision done two and a half years ago 2018. First one done 2016 without success. My knee is mis-shapen, sore to touch, gives way and locks and is affecting my back. I need some answers

After being diagnosed with Osteonecrosis I had First TKR January 2016. MUA July 2016. Unsuccessful. Revision in August 2018. This is February 2021. Still in pain. Knee feels like it is in a vice and painful to touch. I have now been told I have Arthofibrosis of which there is no cure because surgeons do not know enough about this. I wish I had never had surgery. The pain I suffered before was mild compared to what I am going through now. I have lost all faith in the medical profession. Wish I lived in America, where there seems to be more knowledge about TKR.
