Side Effects of Plavix is there an Alternative

Posted by Sundance(RB) @sundance6, Aug 16, 2019

I have been on Plavix for approx 8 months now for an 80% blockage in my main artery on my left side of my neck. I still haven't decided to have it taken care of, My issue is that I am brusing terriably ,ost on my arms and hands, plus everyting i hit something anywhere on my body it bleads. I wear long sleeves so not to freak people.
My wife is on Warfin and dosen't have this problem. For some reason she had not noticed my brusing and bleeding. She spends much of her time taking care of our 8 year old Grandson 3 hours away. She and my daughter became very concerned this last week when I was with them because I would hit something with my legs or hands I would start to bleed then they saw all my brusies.
I called the Neurologist who had percreibed it for me to ask about what was happening. (I JUST NOTICED ON THE SIDE OF THE BOTTLE IT SAID CALL YOUR DOCTOR IMEDATELY IF YOU ARE BRUSING AND BLEEDING) When I got one of his nurses they were very unconcerened about it. When I told one about what it said on the bottle she just dismissed it as my problem!
I asked if there was anything else that maybe we could change tom again she dismissed it as my problem! I quickly dismissed her!!
Anyway I need some help and advice for what is going on with my body and what I percieve as a reaction to the Plavix.
Let me know if you have any questions or suggestions!
Thanks,
Sundance (RB)

I had an aFib attack & a heart attack right afterwards. They were due to an extremely stressful and painful insertion of an Nasal-Gastro tube during an intestinal blockage attack---- Yes all 3 at almost the same time!

Anyway, after all this happened, I was prescribed Eliquis for preventing clots & strokes. Went to the drugstore to fill this & was presented a bill for over $350.00 for a 1 months supply! That is WITH drug insurance. Naturally, there was no way I could afford such an outrageous amount. I applied for financial help from the drug company, but was turned down because I had drug insurance. What a bunch of malarkey. I am now in limbo as I am getting a new heart dr., and can't see him for 2 months.

The old dr. refused to try Coumadin for me, in fact he refused any help at all, that's why a new dr. I am just taking baby aspirin.
Any ideas why Coumadin, an old standby was not prescribed instead of something unreasonably priced?
Thanks for the helpful material given here!!!!

Hi i knoticed you were put on eliquis. I thought i would mention my own experience getting Eliquis. Before my heart transplant theu tried me on that but was nor on it long. But i thought i might suggest 2 ways to get it cheaper. Some insurance companies have mail order scrip like mine which os Blue Cross Blue Shield. I was able to get it much cheaper that way. Also another way i was offered was to contact the manufacturer of the drug and sometime you can get coupons for money off. Even free for a period of time to try it. The funny thing with me is they decided afterwords i needed a Heart anyway so i ended up with left over pills. I often wonder why there isn't a way to recycle unopened medications. Such a waste at times.

My husband had 100% blockage on the right side of his carotid artery. And 96% blockage on the left. He had surgery to clear the left side and the right is left in place since it’s completely occluded and will not allow a clot to pass through.

It was a long time until they got his blood pressure under control and after surgery he did take the blood thinners and heparin injections in his stomach. But when he came home after a couple weeks because he was concerned with all the bruising he took it upon himself to stop the blood thinners and just take supplements.

Now I will not suggest you do the same and it is something you need to discuss with your doctor. But my husband takes vitamin C because it helps stop bruising and keeps your blood vessels in shape. And he also takes garlic and omega-3 both of which are supposed to help avoid any kind of blood clots. Naturally.

He still bruises a bit easily, but not as easily as he was and it seems like he was bruising as easily as you are. I don’t know if all this helps you but I just felt I just needed to answer because my husband had similar circumstances best to you. Blessings

Hi there danab,
Thanks for your suggestions. As mentioned, I did try to go thru Eliquis's patient assistance program, but was turned down because I had insurance! Crazy, even with insurance the cost was $350 a month. The mail order plan offered was only slightly less money than going to the pharmacy.
So, what's so bad with Coumadin? I know that one needs to take constant blood draws when on it, my doctor said it was weekly! That seems like overkill. I am hoping my new dr. in November will have some new ideas. I hope I last that long---LOL!

So Mermaid, Same problem I had with my new meds to replace the Plavix. I went back to the Dr. He percribed the same med except it didn,t have the asprin, so I have to take an Baby Asprin when I take it.
Went to my insurance company, It would still be well over $150. Which I can't afford! As with the other medication I use I went to my pharmacy and we looked it up on GOODRX.
Turned out to be under $50.
Anyof you who have not tried GOODRX yet you need to. I would guess it has saved me over a $1000 just this year.
It's best to go to their site, put in the medication, then where you live, it will then come up with Lowest to Highest prices and location of what pharmacy it is located.
I've told others who said their Pharmacy told them they do not accept GOODRX. My friend went on line and pulled prices and found that they lied to them. If you can run the coupon off that is the best. If not have it on your phone and show them.
Good Luck!
My wishes to everyone to have a Wonderful Holiday Weekend to Honor all of us that have worked to make our country Successful!

Hi---- Looked up GoodRX online & found the lowest price was $448! That is even higher than my drug insurance price of $350.
Wow, this Eliquis must be quite a drug, wonder if it makes you younger and more beautiful as well as preventing clots.
All I can say is that the drug companies are missing out on most sales if only a few people can afford it, They could be making decent profits as well as helping people live longer. But I guess, that is not important to them.

I have had a DVT and blood clots in my lungs. I have been clear of clotting for 3 years. Instructed that I have to stay on 20mg of Xerallto daily for the rest of my life. I do not like taking medication due to possible side affects. Also, I feel once a person is on the meds for so long the body becomes immuned to the meds and stop working. I was recently diagnosed has a type 2 diabetic so, I am concerned with the xerallto interacting with the diabetes meds.

I am curious does anyone know of natural remedies to help eliminate clotting? Is it true a person stays on a blood thinner at the age of 46 for the rest of their life? Sorry for the questions just looking for reliable resources and I know I can find that with Mayo Clinic

sundance, I realize the thread is old, BUT, it does not matter. I have been on Plavix 20 years plus - It took
quite a while to learn the hard way what was causing bruising all the time. I bump the door jamb at times and it keeps my elbows black and blue.
Just had the pacemaker battery changed and the Doc wants me to change to Eliquis, that stuff is just too high
to even have a second thought about it. I do not bleed
openly unless the skin is broken, Then, I have to use bandaids to stop it. So sorry I can not offer any good news. I keep reading all I can about different problems and I appreciate your information concerning Plavix.

Took Plavix for over 10 years ...suffered a stroke last July 2023 .. they found out the Plavix had stopped working and none of my Dr's noticed it. Have been on Eliquis since then no issues no bruising since it works differently that Plavix. It is very expensive my co-pay for 3 months is $462.00 but there are programs out there where you can get it for free or reduced cost depending on your income.
