Eliminating Foods for Neuropathy pain

Posted by avmcbellar @avmcbellar, Jul 20, 2019

I have tried doing without certain foods and drinks containing caffeine and have discovered it helps me to lower my neuropathy pain to a level that is tolerable. It is not easy to eliminate chocolate, tea, and coffee from my diet.

I use my iPad because I can make it stand up and I don’t have to hold it. The best position for me is to lie on my side and put the iPad on an end table at eye level. My husband uses his smart phone a lot and I notice that his head and neck are in a forward position, not a more natural straight position like when you are standing up and looking straight ahead. He has been having neck and shoulder pain and I think that it is from looking at his phone for hours on end.

I concur completely.

Last evening after one of the most pain free days I’ve had in several weeks we went out to dinner and I had a low country sautéed dish with shrimp and sausage and new potatoes in a broth. I didn’t eat the potatoes but did drink the broth. Last night I had one of the worst flair ups of neuropathic pain ever, so I’m up at 4:30 a.m. trying to figure out what happened. I think the “bad stuff” leached out of the potatoes and was in the broth. The last time I had such a bad night was after eating a meal of tomato sauce on spaghetti squash. Of course tomatoes and potatoes are both in the nightshade family (along with eggplants and peppers). They contain an alkaloid that can be very toxic to some people, and apparently you can develop a sensitivity to it over time as I have. Nightshades are one more thing I need to avoid eating along with gluten, bread, sugar, fake sugar and alcohol.

Ughhhh... @catro I'm sorry to hear of your miserable evening. Neuropathy certainly does require alot of self discipline. Some days it's hard though and we deserve a little eating freedom. Be well, as your body readjusts.

That's been my experience Peggy. The waxing and waning is something my doctors can't explain which means they don't know. I can't believe they told you your nervous system is dying when they don't know why. How depressing is that? I wonder if any other doctors has said this to their patients...and if it is true. So what happens when it's dead? Did they give you an end of the road scenario? You should ask if they've ever treated anyone who's died from SFN. From what I've read, people don't die from SFN.

I have a very strong reaction to nightshades. Potatoes cause a severe flair up, as do tomatoes, and it doesn’t take more than a little bit. This has come on relatively recently as my PN has progressed. Has anyone else had this experience?

@catro, I have read about that somewhere, I don’t understand the connection though. I don’t have that problem but have wondered about too many carbs or sugar also causing a problem for me so I limit myself. Alcohol is the worst for me, even 1/2 glass of wine will trigger a bad night. Helen
