Eliminating Foods for Neuropathy pain

Posted by avmcbellar @avmcbellar, Jul 20, 2019

I have tried doing without certain foods and drinks containing caffeine and have discovered it helps me to lower my neuropathy pain to a level that is tolerable. It is not easy to eliminate chocolate, tea, and coffee from my diet.

Hi, @catro - sounds like a significant discovery for your neuropathy if you've discovered certain foods - tomatoes and other nightshade plants, monk fruit-sweetened creamer in your coffee, and possibly gluten and dairy - can cause a reaction. Wondering if @rwinney @iceblue @cncwi17 @avmcbellar @retiredteacher have any input on whether similar foods have caused a neuropathic reaction for them.

How are you finding going off some of these foods, @catro?

@lisalucier @catro My endo has decided I don't have neuropathy. I eat tomatoes daily and use Truvia in my morning coffee. I can't tell any difference in any foods I eat causing problems except with my diabetes. That is my main concern now as the numbers are too high, and foods don't seem to make a difference. So, I'm trying to get that under control.

Last evening I had coffee with creamer sweetened with monk fruit which I had never tried before. It has set me on fire — feet, legs and hands are burning. Has anyone else had that kind of reaction?

Hi @catro — I don’t have diabetes. I would imagine high carbohydrate foods will exacerbate the diabetic neuropathy with the decrease of blood supply to the nerves. After 2 months of being on the Keto diet I regained my taste to foods. I was so happy to be able to enjoy eating foods again. I am still on the Keto diet. I did notice cutting some of the acidic foods decreased my bloating. I feel so much better. Since the Keto diet was used about a hundred years ago to prevent seizures, I do believe it has neurological benefits for me. The diet became less popular later when drugs were introduced to prevent seizures.

I want to share a very interesting book that may ring true for some of you. SUGAR CRUSH by Dr Jacoby. I was the one that brought homemade cookies, brownies, cakes and banana bread to work then went home and ate the leftovers for dinner! I could, and still can, down a large bag of chocolate candy in 24-48 hours. I was researching neuropathy, again, came across this title and fortunately my library had it available as an ebook. I seriously was eating Dove chocolate as I started this book - straightforward information, he doesn’t get too technical with medical terms and explanations. I know I need to eliminate or seriously cut back on my sugar (&alcohol) intake. I believe he has a point!

PS - my A1c and glucose tolerance test and blood tests were all fine, close to prediabetes, but no Dr ever mentioned it, or to make dietary changes, or asked about my eating habits.

Of course I'm listening Linda. You know how it is, people feel better if they have something to blame there ailments on. now if they were eating dark chocolate I could understand how that would make any condition worse, if they managed to live through the horrible experience.
