Costochondritis

Posted by jadillow @jadillow, Apr 29, 2019

I just wanted some more info on this for my chest pain and see if this is possibly an issue. I have a pain in upper ribs, both sides of sternum. Not intolerable but annoying. During time of pain it feels those ribs are “raised”. Any insight would be great. Thanks.

I'd like to be added to this discussion too. Sounds like I've stumbled onto what is going on with my chest pain that I've been told is arthritis. I looked it up and it describes perfectly The pain that comes and goes. I feel and broke several ribs 5 years ago. Now I get these pains and sometimes it's so acute that it makes me catch my breath. I'm a small framed, light weight, female, 58 yo with Fibromyalgia, osteoporosis, Osteoarthritis, neuropathy and lumbar replacement. A totally messed up neck.

@jadillow Good Morning. Just wanted to throw this experience in as a possibility. Have you been taking some form of boniva or other bone density medication? When my dexascan indicated a need for better bone density, I was prescribed a monthly dose of boniva. I had exactly the same side effects; pain in ribs and sternum. After 4 months, and with no other options, my primary care physician terminated the medication. Since then, I have had no reoccurrence.

I have Osteoarthritis and lately I did lift a lot of heavy paper boxes which were I agree, too heavy for me. I started having pain in my chest and upper back but this is usual for me... but then I went outside for a walk and could not do it I had awful chest pain including crucifying pain on the side of my cage rib and upper chest... stopped walking it would go away, was not loosing my breath or anything but had to stop was too painful. About 4 days later I started back, then could not walk more than 3 to 4 minutes it would start back, finally decided to go to my doctor. Well he panicked and sent me to emerge for "heart tests" within no time I had done all of them, the only test that puzzled them was the "Stress test" walking on that strap did not do at all what it did when I was walking outside... but the doctor did not like that I had pain when not holding to the bar, when my arms where loose and moving while walking. So, he sent me for "Angiogram" which turned out to be completely normal and no blockage . Now they are giving me "acid reflux" pills saying it must me that ! I also started seeing and getting treatment at a Chiropractor, but this hurts soo much...
Please tell me, HOW do they diagnose "Costochondritis" ? and if it is that, what can we do to make it better? I suspect I've had that for quite some time which comes and goes now and then, is that at all possible.
Waiting for any help you can give me.
Thank you for reading.

Yes I do get this and it seems like a mystery as to why I have it. I was diagnosed with this symptom a few years ago. Mine is in the upper part of my chest. It sometimes burns and is tender to the touch. I feel like I also have a tightened band around me.. I get a lot of pain with breathing. I’ve had this for years but when I went off a strong pain med alot of chest pains returned. I also get a significant higher heart rate and palpitations. I too am going through a list of tests in the cardio diagnostic lab I hate bringing it up with my doctors because I have a few other “fires” to put out with my health. But this symptom has been on my mind because it flares up.
I hope you all find answers to this perplexing and painful problems.

I have had a fullness or right feeling in middle of chest/sternum area and it comes and goes but stays for a little while. Also non stop belching. Possibly condritis ??

Check about your esphogas. It could be either your stomach or esphogas.

Yeah. I was thinking maybe all the burping and reflux caused it to hurt. I assume if it were my heart and it started early yesterday and went away and came back, then it would have already went out I guess
