My dad has a mass on bladder and kidney not functioning

Posted by formydad @formydad, Apr 24, 2019

He is getting surgery tomorrow to remove mass have no idea if cancerous- assuming they will send off - doc said removal may”jump start his kidney which he was unaware is not functioning.. he had prostate cancer and has brach treatment i believe - that cancers gone but i have been reading that having had radiation for it may lead to bladder cancer - anyone experience this?

Thanks for all your suggestions i think he’s been taking every laxative he can to get things moving. But i will ask to be sure. ( prob just the thing you want to hear from your daughter about but oh well)
He got some bad news about the swelling the ct showed more cancer around the abdomen and some on his liver 😔. I said well is that whats causing the leg swelling? They said it could be pressing on a nerve or something...they are going to cut his radiation down to 5 more and he’s supposed to see his other cancer doc now.. they may move to immunotherapy. He told my mom he may end up on hospice soon 😢. Im going to get pick up some groceries for them and a few masks a friend is making for them. I just wish there was something i could do. But I know there isn't. I will be here for them and help in anyway i can. Its all so hard. But it’s not taking God by surprise. I will continue to
pray! Ill mention to him about walking - it gets swollen after he gets moving really tight. Just one leg. Maybe his other doctor will address it more. Thanks for being here.

@formydad It must have been a hard decision for him to do, but he will find value in focusing on his health. Each day, each milestone will be all the more precious, no matter how he has looked at it before. He is strong, and has passed this on to you! Afternoon! Dad started keytruda yesterday praying for minimal side effects. Does anyone have advice for painful leg swelling? He can hardly walk it hurts. The docs gave him socks- and when he started the keytruda a doc said this might help alleviate that.. he doesn't feel like doing anything:( id like to get him out of the house.

@formydad I don't have any information on Keytruda, but within the Lung Cancer group there is a discussion on it https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/immunotherapy-and-chemo/
Also, under head and neck cancer, there is a discussion on Keytruda https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/keytruda/
And, one in the cancer group re Keytruda https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/kytruda-treatment/
You might find some information there.

As for painful leg swelling, have any drs said what it is? Fluid retention, or edema? Any comment about watching sodium intake in diet, or fluids, or excercising? I get swelling in my limbs because my kidneys are not functioning well, and not flushing out the toxins. I take a diuretic called furosemide every other day. Is your dad able to sit with his legs up at all? Getting out for a walk and exercising even a little helps me a lot!

I will peruse the links thanks ginger!
Not sure im getting all the info my dad gets from the docs relayed reliably and hes not really letting my mom in on all apts much less wanting me there... but most info come from my mom Or mom asking dad who is concerned always of course. He has had an ultrasound on leg which ruled out a clot. ct was next which showed more cancer- yes. More in abdomen and on liver. Over the past year my dad has had his kidney removed due to invasive muscle bladder cancer then his bladder removed chemo radiation now hes on immunotherapy. So one leg is swollen -yes its painful. And its new. Docs said it was probably the cancer causeing the swelling- maybe sitting on a nerve- they said. What i was looking for was ways to -cope possibly reduce swelling. I guess its a two edge sword he does elevate it - ive told him exercise helps. But i guess he just gets too tired. My dad is not a complainer and has a high pain tolerance hes not lazy but he has been tired so pain is there im just hoping to get him motivated somehow in his tiredness to get moving more but when it hurts him its hard.
Thanks again for the suggestions ❤️

@formydad Maybe you can ask your mom or dad if massage might help him feel better, both emotionally and physically? There are some gentle massage styles. I know that some people swear by foot massage and the trigger points located in the feet. Acupuncture for the swelling/pain/discomfort? Sorry, I need to think some more on this, and will get back to you!
Please know I am praying for you all and want to help however possible.
