Does anyone find that a type of shoe helps your foot neuropathy?

Posted by lorirenee1 @lorirenee1, Mar 25, 2019

I am on a constant quest for shoes that don't kill my feet due to the neuropathy. I find that Spencos and Wolky shoes seem the best. Are there any other suggestions? Shoes can be just crippling for me. Horrid.

@lorirenee1, I feel for you and understand the excruciating pain all too well. I’m hoping that after you slept for a bit the pain subsided at least a little or maybe even a lot. I have been in severe pain daily for a few weeks and hope that something can be done...There is always hope. That epidural may still be taking it’s sweet time to take effect. At least I hope this is the case for you. I too, remember the good times with MaryJane and everything being in slow, mo or hilarious and then came all the delicious junk food and how much better it tasted under the influence...oh my. I will let you know how it goes tomorrow and I hope to receive some kind of game plan. I have fought the good fight but getting a bit worn out. Thanks for thinking of me and I will keep you posted. Peace, -Laura

Hi again, Laura. Yes, thank God, I did feel better after my nap. Now I am wearing toe socks which sometimes help my toes feel more human. Please let me know how it goes with you tomorrow. I really want to hear. I understand if you are pooped after, so whenever you are up to it. So sorry about all your pain. It's just too damn bad. We are too vital for all this nonsense. Peace to you, as well. Lori

another problem I had was cold feet. I bought a heated mattress pad from Sunbeam that has three zones shoulders, midsection, and feet. Each can be controlled separately for ten settings with the wireless remote control which even turns it off after ten hours. King and Queen sizes have two remotes for two persons. Here it is Spring and I am still using the foot section on the lowest setting and sleeping well.

Good idea, John. I tried the heated pad and the heated blanket before that years ago. I had terrible nightmares and gave it up. I decided at my age that my cold feet, which I remember were cold even in high school. were a problem of poor circulation. I laid around and read a lot of books instead of doing sports. Now I sit in the evening with my feet up and let them get very cold until I remember to put on socks for the evening, until 2:00 a.m. when I am hot in bed and take them off. I have some neuropathy damage in my left foot and think it is from my back surgery, so I try to remember to exercise my feet. Every little bit helps when you get old. When my son dealt with people with swollen ankles and heart problems on the local squad runs, he knew it was serious just by looking. He said usually the old ladies were dead within a year, and it was the heart not doing its job well anymore. So I try hard to work on my health to avoid those squad trips in the future. The garden is my therapy gym. I don't last long, but I try to enjoy it knowing that I won't be doing it many more years.

Hello, @thomaslink - I'd like to add my welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. Glad you've connected with @johnbishop. You'll notice I moved your post here to an existing discussion he mentioned, "Does anyone find that a brand of shoes helps your foot neuropathy?" so you can meet others with similar concerns. If you click on VIEW & REPLY in your email notification, you will see the whole discussion and can join in, meet, and participate with other members talking about their or their loved ones' experiences.

That sounds very difficult that having on shoes at all is a problem with your peripheral neuropathy and they feel raw 24/7. Ouch.

Hoping that others here who have talked about challenges with shoes hurting and trying to find solutions will chime in with some thoughts and suggestions for you on this, in addition to how this is affecting your ability to do your job. Please meet @dorisena @lauraj155 @lorirenee1 @peggyn @nanashelly @retiredteacher and others.

Right now at work, do you ice your feet down sometimes, or how are you getting through your workday with the shoe issue?

I am getting by at work by taking my shoes off under my desk. Unfortunately I have a job that requires me to visit customers ( I am in sales ) and even drive trucks. I am not fulfilling my duties to my employer and am afraid I may have to apply for disability soon. Thanks.

What kind of shoes are you wearing now? Have you changed types? Are they hard soled or soft soled? Since everyone seems to be a little different with their problems, it is good to try different shoes rather than listen to others. I know how frustrating it can be. My neurologist said nothing would help my neuropathy in my left foot, but I exercise it anyway in hope it will work better eventually. I met a woman in a wheel chair at church who is paralyzed from her back surgery and said it was nerve damage. Every day I tell myself I am doing better than expected. I understand about your job as we owned a family business and know good salesmen have to be on their feet. When we worked shows we stood on concrete for long hours and everyone suffered. At our business we would have allowed you some slack about the shoes because we wanted everyone to be able to work to their capabilities. We believed that talent for sales was a valuable skill and either you were good at it or you weren't regardless of the condition of your feet. Keep at it to the end and know that you succeeded but perhaps your feet didn't. We are such individualists in our family and like to try things to the limit at times. Dorisena

@lorirenee1, Hi Lori...I had a normal EMG so they did the skin biopsy for small fiber which will take a week or so to get results. If it’s positive I go back in and they will do more blood work to try and determine the cause. I don’t know anything definitive as yet except for Erythromelagia but that doesn’t bother me as bad as the small fiber if that’s what it is. Neurologist said he didn’t see anything in the lumbar spine. He doesn’t know what is causing the left leg weakness or fasciculations in left foot especially in big toe. I don’t know that much yet but I feel like I’m wasting away from inactivity so I am eating some Ben and Jerry’s ice cream right now! He is sending me to a Dermatologist for Erythromelagia. And so now the waiting game once again but at least it’s a start. How are you??? Any relief yet from epidural? If not, have some Ben and Jerry’s with me!!!!!

Hi Laura, It is good news that your EMG was normal. That rules out the large fibers. How does your doc know there is nothing wrong with your Lumbar Spine? Did you have an MRI of your back? I did not realize that you definitely have Erythromelagia. When did you get a definitive diagnosis? I do not remember you mentioning having very red, hot, feet. I actually know very little about Erythromelagia. My description could be inaccurate! Please let me know the results of the small fiber biopsies when you get them. Maybe that will tell you more. Man, you did a lot today. I hope the tests did not hurt too much. I had both of those tests, and both were fine with me. But I am a bit of a warrior, and I don't allow myself to get worked up during tests. I think happy thoughts, do some relaxation breathing, etc. I think I would eat the entire pint of Ben and Jerrys when I got home, though. First I'd eat a half slab of real Texas style BBQ ribs, and then wash those down with Ben and Jerrys. Ice cream is my number one vice, and I really pretty much stay away from it, as I get completely out of control eating the stuff. Anyway, epidural has done nothing so far. Not one little thing. My pain is low-moderate today. Go figure. I give up. Never know what these feet will do. Anyway, time to go to sleep. Thanks so much for writing. Keep me posted, and vice versa. Meanwhile, enjoy when you can. Me too. I wanted to shoot myself yesterday. Today, not so much. The Saga of Da Feet! Stay tuned.... Take care, and we will talk. Lori

Hey guys,
I think it was on this thred, but not sure, but someone went to Foot Solutions and got fitted for ortho inserts. I went there an purchased a pair of sandals so I had something to wear on our trip. She said if I got the special inserts it could help with several things... I have a planter fasciitis that does not get better, my hip and knee are bad and I limp , not to mention a bad back.I was wondering if the inserts they made for you made a difference>>>>

REPLY

Yes, the inserts helped a lot but I put them in SAS tie shoes, not sandals. Sometimes I taped pads in my arches to support them. Then I stretched my feet with the wide rubber bands in four directions every night during the news or when the grandchildren were here and would pull the rubber bands. I had special exercises for the legs and spine area. This therapist was really great with diagnosing me when the foot specialist wanted to do surgery. After a few months the pain was gone and never returned. I still wear the orthotics in my SAS tie shoes and the Finn imported shoes come with their own leather inserts.
My Finn sandals have leather inserts which I can wash and the shoes last forever. I really cured the plantar fasciitis permanently, I think because it has been a number of years. Now I have a problem with neuropathy and I am exercising for that and hope it works. I don't want to take pills. Dorisena

Thank you... I will go and get them. I just cant
stand closed in shoes. I have the finn sandalls. There a site called 6pm that have some finn reduced, if they have your size. I paid full price, but was desperate. I have had 2 injections in the heel and do everything I can find to do and I cannot get rid of the pain.. What therapist gave you gave you the right exercises to do.??
