Cold Symptoms After Esophegeal Manometry and Ph Impedance Test?

Posted by jackiem95 @jackiem95, Mar 16, 2019

Has anyone else had cold symptoms—constant sinus drainage/headache, cough etc after having an esophegeal manometry and ph Impedance tests where they put the catheters up through your nose, down your throat and into the esophagus? After several days My sinuses are constantly draining and nose running and not just a little—plus a cough and lots of sneezing. When I had the catheter removed, the technician didn’t Seem concerned—said that they put a lidocaine gel in the nose with a syringe before the test test and it gets pushed into the sinuses. I really feel like I have gotten a cold somehow.

Hi @jackiem95 that sounds frustrating.

I wanted to introduce you to fellow Connect member @kozlo52 as they have mentioned getting an esophegeal manometry before and may have experienced something similar.

Back to you, @jackiem95 did you show any cold symptoms prior to your tests?

Not really. I did have a small amount of occasional “drip” from one nostril—the sort of thing I sometimes get from seasonal allergies.

I had the tube removed yesterday at about 11:30am and I just spent a miserable night sneezing all night long. I woke up after 2 hours of sleep and must have sneezed 3 dozen times or more before I decided to just give up and get up. I've had a constant sensation of imminent sneezes constantly, even when I'm not sneezing. Then I became very congested and was certain I was coming down with a cold. But now, 24 hours after the removal of the tube, the sneezing has slowed and the sensation has faded, as has the congestion. My cough, that I've had for four months since lung surgery, has not changed. Wish I'd known this sneezing and congestion might be a thing and also what I could have done to ease the symptoms. It's so frustrating to not have this information in advance.

Can you tell me what happened after this post? They want to do the esophageal manometry and PH impedance study on me and I am just looking for someone to tell me how it went for them.
Thank you

I think your question is directed to the initial discussion so I am tagging @jackiem95 for a better chance of seeing your comment.

You mention considering esophageal manometry and PH impedance study, hoping to hear more follow-up to reassurance. @imeanit may have an update as well.

Do you mind sharing, what brings you to this point of considering testing? How are you feeling now?

I had an endoscopy with bravo placement in January that was negative for acid reflux. For a few years now my only symptoms have been waking up with my throat hurting a bit and at the top of my stomach. It would go away when I got up. About 3 years ago they had me on 3 kinds of medications and my symptoms got worse with each addition. Finally a doctor took me off all and I was fine for a while but the same symptoms returned hence the Bravo study. Now since the endoscopy with Bravo I have been having more reflux symptoms occasionally. For example a few weeks ago I had constant all day acid reflux pain for about 5 days in a row, I have never had that. And now a few days ago all of a sudden during the day my mouth began hurting…so now my tongue, cheeks and gums are all sore. I woke up today with the taste of blood in my mouth. And my nighttime reflux symptoms are much worse. I expect I am going to have to go through with these tests. I have problems swallowing pills at times so the thought of swallowing a tube is stressful. And especially with a sore mouth and throat….
