Recipes, Food Tips, Healthy Eating & More

Posted by Debbra Williams, Alumna Mentor @debbraw, Feb 22, 2019

Some of the members of the Gratitude Discussion Group were interested in having a place to share recipes and food ideas. I’m hoping that we can use this thread as a place to have that kind of discussion. I’d love to hear your ideas for quick meals, comfort food, healthy snacks, and more.

Personally, I’ve just been through a bad reaction to one of my medications that left me with a very queasy stomach. I would love to hear ideas – or recipes – that might be used when you need to get something on your stomach, but don’t want to overdo it.

Hopefully, this thread will even be a place where we can share recipes for special treats and yummy rewards. It doesn’t always have to be healthy!

I’d love to hear from members who have been part of other discussions AND from new members who have good ideas, recipes and food tips to share. I’m excited to see who might start us off here with an awesome food suggestion!

And what's so terrible about marriage, @jakedduck1?

Well let’s see, do you want it alphabetical or chronological? You know what they say about marriage.
Here’s a couple jokes that kinda sums it up.
“Marriage isn’t a word it’s a sentence.”
What’s the difference between love and marriage?
A: Love is one long sweet dream, and marriage is the alarm clock.
To be honest not getting married is probably my greatest mistake. But I’d hate to subject myself to a wife. No one would deserve that. They’d probably divorce me within the hour.

@user-chdb5e8ac I agree with you about Instancart I love it I cant go shopping anymore either altho I go for few items not a lot of groceries . I love instacart they signed me up but right now I opted out as I cant pay the full amount at one time . I might contact them and see if they have a payment plan. Do you know anything about this ?

On my Instacart account, the charges all go onto my credit card. I give the shopper/delivery person a nicer tip if I receive everything I asked for, and if I get the items fresh, and then that's a 2nd charge on my credit card. All my food goes onto this one credit card, and then I pay for it in full when my check comes from social security. That's how I budget. It's been working for me this way anyway.

I wanted to share with the group that these grocery delivery services are wonderful! I use Instacart but there are others I'm sure. I can go online and select the foods I want, and I receive text messages from the shopper and while the items are delivered to my door. I just love it. I don't drive anymore, but if I wasn't feeling well and I needed something from the store , its really easy to just order it and have it delivered.

I paid $99 a year for the service, I was alittle concerned about that but not anymore. I order $35 of ittems at no delivery charge, and I usually tip my delivery person $5-$8. I usually text message while they are shopping, things like, green bananas please, not brown, etc.

Instacart is a nice service if its offered in your area.

@user_chdb5e8ac - Erin, I'm so glad you brought up food delivery. I totally agree with the value. Ten years ago, when we lived in Boston, we lived on the 39th floor of a downtown hi-rise. At that time, there weren't lots of downtown grocery shopping options and I had a busy and demanding job. I used to order from a service called PeaPod religiously. Having groceries brought to the door was so convenient and I felt the convenience well re-paid the additional expense. I didn't have to get on the T or take the car out to shop. Fast forward to retirement... we now live in St. Augustine, FL. I had a knee replacement in January. It was a pure delight to know that Instacart would bring me groceries during my recovery. My personal experience is that the shoppers are extra careful to pick the fresh and nice looking products. There are lots of situations where food delivery can really contribute to a happy and healthy lifestyle. Glad you called attention to it.

And here is a real recipe!
How to Make Asparagus Tomato Salad:

Rinse the asparagus and tomatoes in water and cut off the bottoms of the asparagus spears, then cut them into thirds.
Bring a few cups of water to a boil on the stove, and boil asparagus for 5-7 minutes. Drain the asparagus and place in a bowl of ice water to keep asparagus from cooking more.
Cut cherry tomatoes in half, and the string cheese into bite-sized pieces.
In a large bowl, combine the cherry tomatoes, asparagus and string cheese pieces.
Pour the dressing over the top, add pepper and basil, and mix. Chill until ready to serve.

@merpreb

I may try this recipe. Is there any specific dressing that you use for the Asparagus Tomato Salad that is especially good?

yay! I didn't realize that $9.99 a month option! I had signed up for 2 weeks of a free trial, and then was charged for the whole year, so watch out for that.

Hi Erin,
I joined today. Thank you for the coupon. I got $15.00 off. It’s a pain if you don’t know exactly what you want. If I’m at the store I see stuff I forgot to add to my list. This makes you think, which isn’t something I do very well.

@jakedduck1 oh wow, you are welcome for the coupon! I recall the first time I used Instacart I was a bit confused picking out my shopping items too, but after you order the first time, Instacart remembers your favorite things for next time.

once you place an order and the shopper is shopping, you can text your shopper, I like that.

I like to switch stores each week, I rotate locations each week (HyVee, Schnucks, Aldi so far) and I'm going to shop at Fresh Thyme and Costco next 🙂

I was going to say I came across an instance where the lemonade I always purchase wasn't offered on the website at HyVee. I always used to buy the low-sugar AE Lemonade at the store, and the regular AE Lemonade was displayed on the website. I selected the regular AE Lemonade on the Instacart website, but then put a note on my order "please get the low sugar lemonade instead", and my shopper figured it out 🙂

Hi,
Is the person who shops the same person who delivers?
Now all I need is someone to plan and cook them. Any advice???
