Hearing Loss: Come introduce yourself and connect with others

Welcome to the Hearing Loss group on Mayo Clinic Connect.
This is a welcoming, safe place where you can meet people living with hearing loss, and friends and family supporters. Whether you were born deaf or hard of hearing, experienced hearing loss after birth or with aging, it helps to connect with others. Together we can learn from each other, support one another and share stories about living with hearing loss, coping with challenges and celebrating milestones.

Let’s chat. Why not start by introducing yourself? What is your hearing loss experience? Got a question, tip or story to share?

Interested in more discussions like this? Go to the Hearing Loss Support Group.

@davekoh

Thanks...Will look into it

Have not found any yet for my pixel. Interesting is that I have had a pair of Google chats with suggestions as to what to try. But they will not answer my question if an external mic exists.

My hearing loss is from birth. My middle ear components do not transmit sound properly. In the late 80's I had a Total Ossicular Replacement Prosthesis placed in my right ear. My left ear was not done. Over the last few months I am experiencing frequent high pitched sounds that sometimes last for quite some time. Could my implant be wearing out?

Did that middle ear prosthesis correct your conductive hearing loss? Your question is probably best presented in the ENT group. Keep us posted.

Hi @lakmani and welcome to the Hearing Loss group. Just to clarify, you were diagnosed with sensorineural hearing loss recently, i.e., during the pandemic. But you hearing loss is not related to having had a COVID infection. Correct?

When do you start vocational rehabilitation?

Hi, my name is Michelle. I have a congenital bilateral sensorineural hearing loss which has just been upgraded (downgraded ?) from mild/moderate to moderate/severe. I wore aids intermittently as a child and now that I'm 49, I'm about to get a new pair. This was prompted by my noted (and scary!) cognitive decline. I'm currently being tested by a neuropsychologist on my mental processing abilities, which is complicated by the possibility that I also have undiagnosed ADHD. I'm very much interested in self-advocacy and strategies for hearing impaired people to thrive in the workforce.

Welcome to Mayo Connect Michelle. You will be amazed at how much you will learn from other people who truly 'get it' about hearing loss. Hopefully your new hearing aids will be life changing for you. I encourage you to see if there's an HLAA chapter in your area of the country. Those chapters bring people together to discuss how hearing loss affects their lives. Untreated hearing loss can lead to what appears to be cognitive decline, when much of it relates to cognitive overload. We have to work so hard to hear in some settings that our brains just decide to tune out because we're exhausted. That makes people think we can't think.

My progressive sensorineural hearing loss was diagnosed when I was in my early 20s. By the time I was in my mid 30s I felt helpless. I had been told that hearing aids didn't work well, so I didn't get them. Finally did and it made a big difference for me. Five years later I learned about HLAA. The organization that let me know I wasn't alone because it put me in touch with others. I'll be interested to know if your new hearing aids have telecoils built in, and if your provider explained what they can do for you. Keep us posted on your progress.

The audiologist said hearing aids cannot help me. I should look into cochlear implants. But another audiologist at Stanford said cochlear implants were not appropriate for me and tried new hearing aids. I get the decibels but unless a person speaks distinctly I can't make out the words.

What were the reasons these 2 different audiologists gave you? It sounds conflicting.

My name is Norma. I’m living with age related loss and sudden sensorineural loss in one ear. I travel between Tucson and Scottsdale frequently to see my family (before Covid). It’s a 2 hour drive and my auto is a cargo. Trying to listen to books on tape and the background noise from the other cars make it impossible. Does anyone have a solution, My car is a 2006 Scion and have thought about putting in Sirius or buying another car. Solutions?
