Hearing Loss: Come introduce yourself and connect with others

Welcome to the Hearing Loss group on Mayo Clinic Connect.
This is a welcoming, safe place where you can meet people living with hearing loss, and friends and family supporters. Whether you were born deaf or hard of hearing, experienced hearing loss after birth or with aging, it helps to connect with others. Together we can learn from each other, support one another and share stories about living with hearing loss, coping with challenges and celebrating milestones.

Let’s chat. Why not start by introducing yourself? What is your hearing loss experience? Got a question, tip or story to share?

Headaches- sinus- is allergy related
But upset tummy- that’s unusual isn’t it

@lioness. I did nothing today, due to a headache and an upset stomach. I’m sure the headache is spring allergies but I’m not sure about the stomachache.

@contentandwell In the spring and fall I don't know why but we have stomach problems the Dr told me and I've noticed for me that is true 😔 don't know what the change of weather had to do with it.

@contentandwell and @bookysue, I think the video/audio quality depends on multiple things - using cellular data vs Wi-Fi, speed of your Internet connection/service, any interference and settings for the app you are using. Here's some info that may be helpful.

Thanks, @johnbishop I'm not sure if I missed something in those links, but do you know if FaceTime is over different lines than regular calls? It just seems odd that it was so much clearer than when he just calls, and that his fiancee's grandmother had commented on it a number of times.

I believe FaceTime uses cellular data and not the cellular call minutes so it can impact his data plan which is why he probably prefers to us the wireless connection to do FaceTime. The video would eat up a bunch of a phone plans data allowance so unless you have unlimited I would probably use the wireless also. I've used it a few times with friends and family but not a lot. Here's a better description on how it works.

@johnbishop Thanks, John, good info. We have a plan that includes our son and daughter, for some ungodly reason (they send my husband checks every month), and my daughter is always causing us to go above our data allowance. My husband really hates using data so that could be a problem, but it sure did make my son come through much more clearly.

Hi folks. I was so limited in data coverage which effects visual access to phones. I do not mean to plug a company but T Mobile unlimited for $60 saved my life . I had consumer cellular which meant I underestimated my data usuage. Fought with them and Verzion ( won with Verzion). Internet access meant I saw my test results before docs and got my small cancer issue resolved in time ( penn care learned from me and changed some things) . Data slows down but it allows me access still. Unlimited with T mobile or Verzion ( travelers internationally and across the states- better than T-Mobile )

My name is Michelle. I have been wearing hearing aids for 23 years. I received my first pair when I was 16 years old. Every time I have to go back to another appointment I panic. I always get unfortunate news. This time, I was told my right ear failed to be above 30% which means I am a candidate for a cochlear implant. They are trying to rule out if I have weakening of the cochlear bone since I have been getting dizzy. (I had an MRI came back fine.) I guess I wanted to finally reach out to a forum because I was tired of dealing with the news alone. I have a wonderful family I just sometimes prefer third party discussions. Any and all advice is welcome.

Hi @michelle22 and welcome to Connect. I know the frustration of having your hearing get worse and worse over time. I am at a point where I believe I would probably also be a candidate for CIs.
I wish I could give you some advice, but unfortunately not having a cochlear implant I really cannot.

There is a group specifically about cochlear implants. If you have not checked out the messages there I suggest you do.

I hope you find some information there that will help you. Not being able to hear well really affects your quality of life, and is so frustrating.

Hi!! I am new to this group, and I am looking for help and suggestions. I suffer from moderate to borderline severe hearing loss and work in the healthcare field. I use an amplified stethoscope and can hear well with same but have to remove my aids to do so. Looking for other suggestions/options for healthcare workers such as blue tooth capable stethoscope, etc. Also would like opinions on the best aids/treatments currently on the market now. My hearing loss stems from severe ear infections as a child. Thanks for any information
