Nerve ablation for pain post PKR

Posted by kibe75 @kibe75, Jan 23, 2019

I had a partial knee replacement 11-29-17 at the age of 42.Unfortunately, I'm still suffering from quite a bit of pain. I was on voltaren, which kept the pain tolerable but developed stomach ulcers and now can no longer take NSAIDS. I saw my surgeon last week who told me my options are to live with the pain or have my knee redone to a total replacement. I saw a physical med & rehab doctor today and we discussed a nerve ablation to try to get rid of the pain. Has anyone else done a 0rocedure like this for OA pain or continued pain after surgery? Thanks.

I had a nerve oblation for back pain in September,of last year.I have had minimal relief. But we have to remember everyone's reaction to pain is different, or so they tell me.

Has anyone had a nerve ablation after a TKR? I am just past one year with unrelenting pain so had my ablation this morning. Don’t notice a huge improvement but some. Was told I would feel it immediately but not really for me. Have read it can take 5-7 days to see if it is successful. If it doesn’t work I plan to try focused shock wave therapy. I tried regular shock wave but it wasn’t strong enough. Please chime in if you have had nerve ablation and your experience. Thanks

I recently underwent nerve ablation on both knees after bilateral TKR. On one leg there was a short period of pain reduction, on the second nothing. There is a reason for the pain-the challenge is discovering the reason. Where the pain is concentrated will tell you something, MRI’s can be helpful, when do you feel the pain? Steps, flat surfaces?, the pain can actually originate in your back—the point is you need to see if you can pinpoint the source. I have endured this for 16 months and in a few days will have a knee revision. This is not what I wanted to do but we have exhausted all other treatments. I have a pretty good idea of the cause because of the specificity of the pain location but will find out soon, hopefully. Finding the right doctor is critical. You should not end up being in worse pain than when you started down this road. Good luck!

I had my Saphenous nerve cut, and packed off in a way that it would never regenerate , I was told that this would end my pain right away, well 3yrs later I can say it took my pain from a 9 to 8.9 I believe I was feed a bunch of BS by some hot shot doctor. I spoke with another doctor who I have found to be totally truthful and he said finding to right nerve or nerves causing the pain is for the most part impossible. He compared it to having a needle in your hand and pushing it into a hay stack and hitting another needle in the hay stack. Sorry to say after 17 procedures and numerous oral drugs my nerve pain remains at 8.9 after my TKR .

I am 9 months post-op TKR. I don’t have pain but I have weakness in that knee that makes walking without assistance difficult because it feels like the knee is going to collapse. I’m having an EMG to try to determine if the weakness is the result of nerve damage during surgery or coming from my back where I have severe spinal stenosis. Anyone else had this complication after TKR?

I haven't had this problem. Have you been doing exercises for the quad muscle group in that leg?

Yes I faithfully did all pre- and post-op exercises and still do them along with resistance training at the Fittness club. It is not an issue of quad strength. It may be a nerve that was severed during surgery or coming from my lumbar stenosis. Hopefully an EMG will shed light in the source.

I have lumbar problems due to arthritis and spondyolosis and had surgery about 10 years ago. No fusion either. That may be the culprit with you. Symptoms are different. I didn't have weakness but a lot of pain standing. I think the procedure I had was a laminotomy. There was a ruptured disc at L5/S1 that had to be removed, and arthritis spurs that were removed by drilling access holes in S1, L5, and L4.

I hope you find and fix what's wrong. All the best. Joe
