Stomach Biopsy Diagnosis after Helicobacter Pylori Infection
Hi, I have been fighting H. Pilory infection for the last couple of months and now the infection is now cleared but it has left me with IM and a concerning diagnosis. Current prescription: Sucrafate 1G, Ranitodine 150mg, Omeprazole 40mg, famotadine 40mg.
I am very concern about this since the pain doen’t go away specially after eating. I am also expecting and don’t want to take any meds that could harm the baby. I need help figuring out my choices here to stop the progression of IM and what are other natural ways to restore my health. Here is my diagnosis:
Gastric antral mucosa with intestinal metaplasia, reactive epithelial changes, and mild chronic inflammation.
Thanks for your help.

Is it possible for you to obtain a referral to a nutritionist right away? There are all sorts of diets to follow and supplements to take for gut inflammation but all that may be different if you are pregnant. A nutritionist can be of great help to you in this situation. People usually follow lactose free, low carb, and gluten free diets for inflammation but that may not be feasible for a pregnant woman.
Hello, @alfanny, this is @mamacita, from the Adults On The Spectrum page. I was very interested in your situation and just wanted to pop in and give you just a good word or two, of encouragement. I personally have been on the Lazy Keto diet for over a year. I am Diabetic and also have IBS and Diverticulitis. When I am faithful to my low carb diet, I have no stomach or gut issues whatsoever. My A1C went down to 6.2 and my blood sugars are normal. I have plenty of energy to do what I need to do. I take no medication at all for my stomach or gut issues. I have the medication, I just simply do not need it if I eat what I know is good for me.
My young friend has a one year old, a five year old, and an eight year old. She has extremely high insulin levels, and has been told by her physician that she should eat like a diabetic does. She follows a looser, less strict version of the Keto Diet. Throughout her pregnancy, she continued the Keto Diet with rare "cheats." She did not gain a ton of weight and was carefully monitored by her OB/Gyn. Most Nutritionists are connected with the ADA and they are hooked on fifty carbs per meal. Fifty carbs per meal may work for some people but to me they were a death sentence. There was no way I could keep my blood sugars down, and worst of all, the pain in my abdomen never went away. I think that a good nutritionist at this point would be someone who recommends lots of vegetables, a little bit of fruit here and there, a small handful of nuts/seeds, and protein from a reputable source. Organic if you can get it.
Grains seem to be the culprit in body inflammation. Maybe not for everyone, but for me, definitely. Many people with problems eating typical grains can manage with a couple of slices of something called Ezekiel Bread. It is made from sprouted grains. Definitely keep a food record, to try and track what seems to bother you. Find the medical/nutritional help you need and work with them on the best diet you can manage. Drink lots of pure water and do your best. You have everything going for you! You probably won't have all your questions answered immediately. Good things take time. I have confidence in you!

Hello @guthealth, I have similar situation, had before HP but now I don't have it, however last week my gastric biopsy result came: Positive for intestinal metaplasia, but Negative for H pylori, dysplasia and malignancy. The doctor said to repeat the upper GI after 3 years and to have a follow up with him after 6 months. But my question is, why he did not prescribe any treatment for me espcially if this condition my increase my chance to develop a gastric stomach cancer? I did not know how bad it is untill I started to read about. There are many articles about Intestinal Metaplasia but don't know how reliable these resources I am scared now because every time I eat small meal I feel full like the food is going up. Don't know what to do for reverse this. Any help is much appreciated.
Apparently these GI cancers are slow growing. You may not need a follow up for three years and never develop cancer. I ended up not having a colonoscopy this time because I had one a year ago and it was completely normal. My doctor is going on the assumption I have SIBO because my symptoms developed after a round of Clindymycin, the antibiotic from hell, in my opinion. As far as diet, I am following a gluten free, lactose free, low fructose, low carb diet. It sounds strict but it is helping my irritated intestines heal, which will take a while. Look into low FODMAP or SCD diets. If your gut is inflamed, it can’t digest grains, wheat, lactose, etc. Find a dietician if you can. Has made all the difference for me. I also take supplements, omega 3, vitamin D, B complex, vitamin A, zinc, etc, and probiotics (Florastor and Align). Hope this helps.
So I had a screening colonoscopy today 1st one was at 50 no 60. No polyps at 50 . At 60 2 small ones and one larger one. The 2 smaller ones he taught were ok. The larger one he was going to send to pathology frankly I am a little nervous. Any one have experience in this area and words of wisdom to share with me..
Hi my name is Justin. After reading this post I decided to make an account on here. My Doctor found complete intestinal Metaplasia in my lower stomach and told me I am negative for h.p. He said he romoved it and there’s nothing to worry about. How I should follow up in 3 years. He didn’t put me on anything. I still get dull feelings in my upper left stomach. Also I burp a lot after eating. Still he said it’s fine. How has your experience been? I don’t know if this is a normal for them to tell us basically ignore it? Or are they waiting for it to be come worst? Why didn’t he say complete intestinal Metaplasia is something they don’t treat and it is nothing to worry about? What’s the difference from complete and incomplete?
Hi Justin,
You mean your doctor remove the complete intestinal Metaplasia? My doctor said is not recommended as it will recur again after removing. I have incomplete intestinal Metaplasia in the antrum of the stomach. Anyone also has incomplete kind and what did your doctor do? Thanks
I generally have some polyps and all are sent to pathology routinely. Never a problem. Have gone from 10 years, to 5, now to 3 (in my 70's)
