Constant Eye Pain

Posted by OliviaD @olivia52, Dec 8, 2018

Has anyone had constant eye pain and found relief? Also has anyone taking Botox for one year, had great results and then it quit working? I have read you can build up antibodies to it? Now what? I need to be able to work and function at home. Have tried countless oral meds without any luck. Some make it worse some don’t do anything.

Hi @olivia52 you may have noticed I changed the name of this discussion to "Constant Eye Pain" in order for other Connect members to easily find your post.

It must be disheartening to have a successful treatment suddenly become unsuccessful.

I wanted to tag fellow Connect members @anniemaggie @rosemarya and @jenniferhunter as they may be able to help offer ideas or support as you look for relief to your constant eye pain.

Back to you @olivia52 have doctors been able to provide a diagnosis for your eye pain?

Hi, olivia52. I am sorry to hear about the pain that you are suffering. I am also sorry to report that I have not experienced anything like. I have found that for my particular eye condition, that the best thing that my doctor and my opthamologist ever did was to send me to a retina specialist for treatment with my own chronic eye condition.
It sounds like you have been experiencing the pain for a while. My first step, to ask for a referral to a specialist. (my doctor got me an appointment the next day) Are you being treated by any kind of specialty doctor for your eye eye condition or eye pain?
Will you tell me what you find out?

No they have not. I have been to see a neuroopthalmologist twice over the last 5 years at Mayo. Offered drops to numb the eye, which helps at times. Also drops for dryness. They are not sure if it’s part of my migraines or not. Really no solid diagnosis. Someone mentioned a retinal specialist...not sure if that is any different. Also hoping to find others that have had luck with Botox for Migraines for a year and then have it stopped.

@olivia52 What I find when I start looking up literature is that some thyroid diseases can cause inflammation of the ocular muscles that move the eye balls or there can be problems with inflammation of the sheath of the oculomotor nerve which is the nerve supply to these muscles that isn't well understood. Since you mentioned having had botox, do you think that could have caused an inflammatory response in your body? Botox is a toxin produced by a bacteria and it is used to lower a response of muscles to nervous stimulation, essentially paralyzing it a little bit. That is why they use it to treat muscle spasms in the body. The Oculomotor nerve is at the base of the brain as the 3rd cranial nerve and behind the eye it passes right next to the internal carotid artery. If there was a problem with that artery that put pressure on the oculomotor nerve, I wonder if it could cause pain felt in the muscles around the eye? I'm not a doctor, but that might be a question to ask. If you have reduced circulation to an area in your body, it would probably feel fatigued. Has anyone evaluated if the circulation is adequate to your eyes? Have they checked for inflammation or thyroid disease? Did you have this eye pain before you had Botox injections? If you think it might be related, you could try a detox protocol. There are supplements that help as things that are used in the detox reactions that take place in the body. A Functional medicine or environmental allergy doctor might be able to help with that. Metagenics and Orthomolecular are companies that create medical foods and supplemets that are sold in doctor's offices for various medical issues. There is also Cranial Sacral work that is manual physical therapy and my physical therapist has done some of that on me. That is gentle manipulation of the skull. Are you taking any medications that could have this as a side effect? Some can affect pressure in the eyeballs. Does your eye pain increase with eye movement? I'm not sure if sinus problems could create eye pain, but they are kind of close. Those are just some thoughts, and hopefully , your neuro opthamologist considered some of that, but if not, you can ask questions. You could look up everything on your medical records to understand what your doctor is thinking.

Could you be on your computer, tv or phone screen too much? Maybe you suffer from dry eyes and need fake tears sold over the counter? I hope it helps.
