What happens after C.Difficile?

Posted by dn22 @dn22, Dec 6, 2018

I got C.diff back in October (early to mid). I had taken clindamycin for BV and it didn't react well for me. I went into the ER for intense pain, bloating, and diarrhea. They found out I had a severe case of colitis, my entire bowel system was extremely inflamed. But they didn't know what type of colitis it was until my 3rd day there. Then they did the colonoscopy, endoscopy, and biopsy. So they treated me with antibiotics. Sent me home with more antibiotics. And after finishing them, and giving it a few days I felt better.

I was still more aware of my bowels, which is saying something since I have IBS already. But other than awareness, and maybe some tenderness in a way, it was normal. Then Thanksgiving came, and I ate what my family made. I had immediate diarrhea and pain. I thought it was the dairy, bc I forgot to start taking my IBS meds again. They had me stop taking them for awhile after being diagnosed with c.diff. Then I tried the food the next day, after taking my IBS meds. Same issues.

So I decided no more thanksgiving food. But the pain, bloating, twisting feeling, and pooping didn't stop. And I would get the urge, but when I went to go, it'd be a lot of gas, that was hard put to come up. When I would poop, the stool itself was very hard, and not a lot would come out.
My mother bought me stool softener. It made the stool less dry and sandpaper-like. But I still wasn't getting any relief.
So last Friday she gave me some of her Super Colon Cleanse (about 3/4-5/8 of a scoop/serving) mixed with Metamucil in a water bottle. And I drunk half the mixture. I still haven't stopped pooping. I'm pooping for hours again, just like with c.diff. No blood this time though. And the stool is pellet like.
I keep waking up to poop, or try to poop. I can't eat anything. Especially not carbs or dairy. I feel like I'm dying, but in a very different way than when I had c.diff.
I don't know what's happening. If I should go to the hospital or not. Or if c.diff has different symptoms the 2nd time around. Or if, because it was such a severe case, that my bowels were damaged somehow. I'm really just not all right, and idk what to do.

I also take Florastor and Align daily (probiotics) and several supplements to help my gut heal. Vitamin D, vitamin A, Zinc, L-glutamine, omega 3, b complex, vitamin c, and quercetin. I put a scoop of collagen peptides in my peppermint tea.

@guthealth Were you actually diagnosed with Cdiff or another type of colitis? And have you tried Inulin? My cardiologist suggested Inulin after I told him about the Cdiff relapses. Inulin feeds the good bacteria. I also take Vitamin D and have for years after having a melanoma removed almost 20 years ago. And I just started taking collagen a few months ago. My gastroenterologist is the one who told me to take Florastor which I believe is key to using the correct probiotic for Cdiff. Cdiff patients need a probiotic that will not dissolve with the acid in our stomach. The Cdiff spores live in the intestinal tracts and most probiotics do little to fight those.

@sandyabbey Please remember that those of us giving you our thoughts on this site are NOT medical doctors. We're just telling you what did or ddi not work for us. Your doctor knows you best. But the more informed you are, the better you will be to fight Cdiff. Read different opinions from various medical professionals on the internet. There are numerous studies out there and even videos where medical staff discuss these. I had never even heard about Cdiff until I got it this past April after taking Clindamycin. It's been a battle for me.

I was initially diagnosed with CDiff but two tests were negative. I ended up with a SIBO diagnosis. I was told by my nutritionist that inulin is a no no for SIBO. I take guar gum fiber per her recommendation. It is a supplement called NutriSource. I take Florastor and Align and a bunch of other supplements as well.

Clindymycin is the antibiotic from hell as far as I am concerned.

Has anyone tried the anti-inflammatory/autoimmune diet and did you find a cure for abdominal distention and indigestion? I saw a dietitian yesterday. This diet is arduous.

Not sure what the autoimmune/antiinflamatory diet is but I am following a gluten free, lactose free, low fructose and low carb/ low grain diet and it has worked wonders for me. I also take supplements like omega 3, L glutamine, quercetin, vitamin A, Vitamin D and Zinc. The idea is not to stay on this diet forever but to very slowly introduce new foods into the diet. I am on a Low FODMAP diet with low carbs. I saw improvement in ten days.

@sue6408 I have not tried that diet. I believe it is very much the same as the Paleo diet. I have a friend who is on Paleo and loves the diet. She's lost over 30 pounds in a year and feels better than ever. The one your dietitian suggested may even be a little stricter than Paleo but suggests omitting many of the same foods.

Hi. I`ve been dealing with this for 4 months now. What you eat is so important,I`ve had 4 bouts of C Difficile, each time was a little worse. Dropped 30 lbs., Now on a 7 week weaning off of Vancomyicin. Seems to be working but have to be very careful what I eat--no chocolate cake for sure. I`m willing to try anything not to get it back!!!

My heart goes out to you. I also went through 4 bouts of Cdiff in 2018. During my 3rd bout, I also did the Vanco taper off for 6 weeks. Three weeks after finishing it, I had my 4th bout. What worked for me was Dificid (fidaxamycin). It's expensive and my insurance wouldn't approve it until I had tried Vancomycin. Even then, the co-pay was high. BUT IT WORKED. My gastroenterologist also suggested I take Florastor every day. I've not been as faithful about taking that this past year. But i did take it every day for a year after my last bout of Cdiff. Wishing you well.
