Tendonitis

Posted by Runnerslife @johnnyboysmom, Dec 5, 2018

I have a 20-year-old son who is a runner. This past December he had an injury in his hip which that is what they thought it was. Prior to that he had a stress fracture in his foot and then after recovering from that is when he had the pain in his hamstring and his butt area. He’s had an MRI on his hip. They said looks normal. He had another MRI recently on his lower back thinking maybe that’s what calling causing his pain. That came back normal. He has had physical therapy, dry needling, massages and he’s taking time off from running. When he starts back to running it begins to hurt he is able to do all kinds of cross training running in the water baking lifting and doesn’t have any pain but is soon as he starts running on land the pain comes back. He is only 20 years old he shouldn’t be having any pain. We have been to multiple doctors multiple orthopedic’s and they’re all telling him everything is fine but that can’t be true if he is in pain. I’m looking for any suggestions that anyone might have that has dealt with hamstring issues they keep telling him it’s just tendinitis. How long does it take to get over tendinitis? It’s been a year now and nothing has helped. My son loves to run distance and it has just been killing him that he cannot get back to doing the sport that he loves. Thank you.

Hello @johnnyboysmom, welcome to Connect. Am I understanding correctly that your son's main issue right now is his hamstring? They said he has tendonitis in his hamstring? I've had tendonitis in my elbow in the past from overdoing it while weight-training. Time was really the only healer and then easing back in to the workouts. Hamstrings, from my own knowledge as a non-medical professional, are a much easier muscle to repeatedly injure if they are not allowed to heal. Has his medical provider ever mentioned that he possibly tore his hamstring muscle?

Thank you for your comment. Yes, he has taken time off multiple times in the past year. When he returns to running, he’s fine for about a week then the pain starts creeping back in. He has no pain with cross training like aqua-jogging, biking, or lifting. Just when he starts running. He had an MRI and it didn’t show a tear. He is able to walk, but does have pain also in about the center of his butt cheek when he walks and sits. He has also had a gait analysis to see how his form is. His foot does cross over but he has improved on that.

Hello, Did the MRIs include contrast dye? Using dye shows more things, such as labrum tear. I've had hip pain for over a year, and an MRI with contrast dye showed moderate tendinopathy in the gluteus medius, gluteus minimus, and hamstring. Like your son, pain is compounded by activity, not an immediate response. I would certainly redo the MRIs if dye wasn't used.

Wow! I had a similar issue back in 2016. Pain in my left butt cheek at the very base where it meets the top of leg. It also radiated into middle of butt.
. I COUND NOT SIT in a chair at all. I leaned my bottom against a stool. Went to doctor and she told me to wear compression underwear and also sent me to PT. I didnt get any MRIs for that but had a fantastic PT that gave me lots of exercises to strengthen. Seems that my left is weaker than right. I used tens unit on it, ice and heat.
It is not gone but its under control. I'm just very vigilant and try not to over do my sports....I cycle, swim, hike and walk.....I ran at one time but gave it up for biking.
I read an aticle about high hamstring Tendonopthy in was a case study. If I find the link I'll get it to you.
Another thing that helped was deep tissue massage....not the relaxation....but find a massage therapist that isnt afrain to get in there. Ann bath soak in Epsom salts
Good luck & Good Health
