Disk replacement & spinal fusion (L4-L5): Post-op concerns
My surgery was done at Mayo, Rochester. It was 8.5 hours long. I can’t remember minute to minute.
The pain is horrible. They only gave me pain meds for 10 days and I have 2 left. Everyone said the first 30 days are the worst. The best things I bought before was the grabber, I drop anyway, toilet riser,
Slippery pajamas. Any suggestions this is rough.

You are welcome!
As far as a walker, you are no where ready to do without it. It can take several weeks if not more than a month. Lots will depend on how you are doing and how confident you feel. I would not do anything without the walker until you see your surgeon again and get his/her opinion. And then, I'd start going without a walking aid in the house only and then only when you can walk near a piece of furniture or wall to grasp on to, if needed.
You'll get there, I promise...it's like overnight you all of a sudden you realize you don't need your pain meds on a regular basis, then you realize getting out of bed or using the bathroom is not as difficult or painful as it once was, then you are walking around the house without a walker, then walking outside without a walker (but make sure to have someone to walk with, you will probably need to hold on to them at the beginning then when you are walking across the street, a parking lot or hill.), then you realize that the more you walk, the less pain you have........It's all a process that takes time! Your back is pissed off at you. It already hurt, the muscles and nerves. Now, you had the audacity to have surgery and allow someone to dig around your spine.....shame on you! lol
Again, I PROMISE IT WILL GET BETTER!!!!!

Your awesome! I feel a little better reading your reply, it was lost in my junk mail. 💕
I’m keeping using the walker, I got dizzy last night and was glad it was there. I’m seeing regular Dr today for wound check. I’m going to ask for 2 weeks more of pain pills.

So glad you had the walker. You might be dizzy from the meds or dehydrated. That is why I suggested that when you walk without a walker, do it near somewhere you can hold onto, if needed. If you walk outside without your walker, walk with someone you can hold on to.
I found that going to a store with a shopping cart is the best place to walk and build up your strength. You might want to try it when you feel ready.

My new disk and fusion are 4 weeks along. I’ve had a lot of nerve pain but it’s getting better.
My question is I hear a loud clunk in my hip when I walk. Have any of you had this? Advice please.
Hi, @user_chf56161a - I've merged your post here to this previous discussion you've started, "7 days post op disk replacement and fusion L-4, L-5," so that you can continue discussion with members like @grandmar @suerc. I'd also like to invite @gailb @sandytoes14 @marleneace @mdmo @jrbuff @karolyn to join in. Hoping they may have some thoughts for you with your new disc and fusion 4 weeks along and now the loud clunk in your hip when you walk.
@user_chf56161a - has your surgeon weighed in on this new issue? Is the hip continuing to give you problems?
I had a spinal fusion back in 1997 L5S1. The surgery went wonderfully. No pain, back to myself in no time. No hip pain or noises. Now 2018, I have many changes in fusion area, arthritis, peripheral neuropathy, have had facet blocks, radioactive ablation injection, pills for peripheral neuropathy. The fusion, as related to me by another back surgeon, told me it is only good for 10 years. Not sorry I did, had 10+ good active years. Now, is another story. Horrific pain in back, going to pain management center. My advice, dont overdo it NOW or for a long time, dont carry anything heavy, twist, bending..........and you should be good to go for years. I felt so good I did everything I shouldn't have. Shoveled snow, carried heavy grocery bags, mowed grass, moved many times by myself. PLEASE, listen, and treat your back as it were a baby. I am in chronic pain every day.

Hi
I am 63. After years of pain. I had C5/6 replaced with artificial discs. The surgery went well and I recouperated quickly.
13 weeks ago I had an Xlift fusion on L3/4 . The recovery has been horrible.
I had a similar discussion with my physical therapist as you discussed.
I think that once feeling better many forget what the doctor said about how to care for ourself after surgery. No lifting, bending, twisting, hyper-extending or carrying anything more than a gallon of milk. When not following directions, all that surgery can go to waste.
The same holds true for any work done on the spine...shots, radio ablation, etc. and long past surgery, too (since a complete healing can take a year or more for the spine to settle in).
For me, it was after a shot. We got new tile floors
Dust flew everywhere and on everything even though the workers were careful. I even got someone in to clean up afterwards.
I took down all the curtains. I washed, ironed and rehung them. I moved furniture, climbed and hung pictures. By nightfall, I knew I was in trouble. After that, not any shot or procedure worked.
I've learned my lesson, too.

You were right! I can do a little more each day. Still having nerve pain, I’m hoping it will pass.
