How did you manage the pain side effects of Prolia?

Posted by pine4234 @pine4234, Oct 26, 2018

I had prolia injection a week ago. I've developed lower back pain and severe spasms. The spasms are so bad I can hardly get out of bed or even out of a chair. Is there anything I can do or take to alleviate this awful pain.

@lioness I meant to say "from the Reclast" regarding your friend.

@contentandwell. I didn't say anything about coffins being stacked outside of hospitals, I only know of NYC. And I never said anything about mass graves for flu victims. So, I don't know where those ideas came from, pretty weird to me. But I didn't post them.

@lilypaws I didn't mean to indicate that you had posted that, it was mainly a rebuttal to the thought that more people die from the flu than from COVID - "there are more people that die from the flu than the virus". The flu can be bad but it has never caused the devastation that COVID has. We will need to be very careful quite a bit longer. That's everyone, not just us "seniors".

@lioness just saw your comment about your girlfriend almost dying from a Prolia injection. My doctor wants me to have one if and when I stop Prolia injections in July. It's bad enough worrying about Covid! How old is your friend (I am 65) and did she end up in the hospital after getting Reclast. It does have loads of side effects when you research it. Glad you are coping well during the pandemic.

Please do a lot of research before you take that Reclast or Prolia. I have not talked to one person who got better using that. I wish I could get my new DEXA scan - but I have to wait until the COVID 19 is not so bad (I have NO immune system). I have been doing nutritional supplements, exercise, and also a very low dose of estrogen. My previous DEXA scan score was very bad -5.7 and I was fracturing. The fracturing has stopped. But I need to get a new scan before I can claim I've improved. I refuse to take something with side effects so bad. Talking to those two women whose jaws were ruined by osteonecrosis after using those drugs was enough to convince me not to try it. The doctor was furious when I said I wouldn't take it. She left the room without saying another word. She knew absolutely nothing about nutrition - when I started talking about calcium, magnesium and boron she looked at me like I was speaking some other language. Those women that got osteonecrosis said it didn't stop with their jaws, it continued to waste other parts of their bodies. No way am I going to pay money to take a chance on that.

BTW: I took my parrot off the heart medication they gave her and she is back to normal! I thought she would die last night - but she is back to being herself! It's a miracle!

@ parrotqueen I am on Tymlos, I had to be on it for 6 weeks before my surgery. I'm doing great on it with some minor side effects. I will be continueing it until my spine has healed from the surgery. They told me I would have to take it for up to two years, but my endocrinologist said to ask my surgeon about it to see if I can stop it after I heal. Then they would put me on something else. If your bones are that bad, I'm worried about you. Ask about Tymlos and see if she will ok that for you. It is an injection into the stomach once a day and the needle is so small you don't even feel it. Bless you!

@contentandwell, @lioness, @parrotqueen, First of all I'm sorry parrotqueen that you lost your parrot. I had to give up my dog because I couldn't take care of her anymore. But she's at where we use to board her and they love her and she's doing great!! I don't think you know me, but I'm having pre-op tests on Monday at Mayo and surgery on the 9th and 11th.
Anyway, we all talk about the Covid-19 virus and I know it's bad, but there are more people that die from the flu then the virus. We just have to take care and not let it get to us. Wear mask, use santizier (SP), wash your hands etc. I hear it over and over. I guess I use my faith and don't worry about it. But, I can understand why people do, because it's all over the news and everywhere.

First, I blessedly did not lose my parrot. Once again, her malaise was due to side effects to a new medication. She seemed to be tolerating it well the first week - so I didn't immediately think of that. Then she began slowly getting less and less active, and eating less food, not singing, not participating in anything. Thank goodness I remembered the medication and took her off it immediately. Today was the fourth day off the medication, and she flew today, ate more, and went into every room of the house. But she was pooped out early - so she is not back fully yet. Also waiting for a song.

Second, your statement that more people die from the flu is no longer correct. According to the CDC, there were 24,000 - 52,000 deaths from the flu this past season that ended April 4. There were an estimated 39,000,000 - 56,000,000 cases of flu. COVID 19 is much more deadly than the flu. We have surpassed 90,000 deaths tonight. What is scary is that more people are dying every day NOW - it goes up with each passing day. I have no idea why states are opening up when the numbers are going up. Wear a mask, wash your hands, and do not touch your face. Stay 6' apart. I am having my groceries delivered for the first time this week. My doctor called me and told me not to go out - she is an infectious disease doctor and she said we are having an uptick in my area (and I lack an immune system). It isn't good to worry - it lowers your immune system (if you are lucky enough to have one!).

@parrotqueen. First of all the Dr had her on Fosamax for awhile I forget the time but her jaw bone started to hurt she went to dentist and he told her her teeth where lose and she should talk to the Dr about her med Fosamax . When he told her of the side effects she stopped it right away and started to do strength exercises and more calcium, mag. and swimming . That was Fosamax then he suggested for her Reclast I was with her 'after the injection she started feeling funny and luckily she was in the clinic as the Dr kept her there for awhile . She almost passed out , Her body just would'nt accept that shot . So just the vit, minerals and dairy products . That had to be in the 2000's cant remember date but is doing well now . She went to her endocrinologist and he put her on massive dose of D3 and other things . Her D3 is now within limits she still exercises

Thanks for your advice. I have had three Prolia injections and really dont want the next one. My bone density based on Dexa results definitely showed significant improvement. I am a big researcher. Reclast or Aclasta as it is called in Canada sounds like a whole new kettle of worms. However, discontinuing Prolia without going on a "relay" drug for one year puts you at risk for vertebral fractures. This is a tiny little fact that many doctors fail to mention at the outset. Amgen, the maker of Prolia, now has this warning in their own literature.
Right now, from my perspective, there are no terrific pharmaceutical choices for osteoporosis.
Wishing your parrot continued good health. Stay safe!

@sue225 As you say, there really are "no terrific pharmaceutical choices for osteoporosis" but the risk is fracturing something and older people who fracture a hip are often in a wheelchair for the rest of their lives and also many pass way within a year due to lack of mobility. I am doing all of the things that have been advised except medication, which I would have done by now if not for the current situation.

This is very frightening stuff.
