My last bone density xray showed that I now am low risk. after about 2 years on Prolia. However, I am increasingly worried about the side effects. Especially, I am experiencing rapid hair loss, one of the possible side effects. I am seriously considering discontinuing the injections.
I've been on prolia for one year and have a dexascan scheduled in a couple weeks. I've written myself a note to remember to let you know if it made a difference. In 2013 I fell and fractured my femur (age 60) and discovered I had severe osteoporosis. I've broken the other leg and a wrist since then. I took alendronate (generic fosamax) for five years and I improved to osteopenia. A year ago my dexascan showed severe osteoporosis again so Dr. switched me to Prolia. I too am anxious to see if there is change.
Hi,
Do NOT start this drug. It is terrible. First of all, this is a drug with chemotherapy chemicals and is used to treat bone cancer. I have had terrible pain in the leg bones, have lost 1/4 of my hair, and the joints in my fingers have all swelled permanently. I wish that I had never heard of this drug. I had 2 shots and will never take another one - the thing is that all the osteoporosis drugs have similar chemical make-ups. Before you start any drug be sure YOU do lots of research. Do not believe the doctor - mine told me that there were no side effects which is not true. My doctor (chair of the endocrinology department) now agrees that I will only do calcium and Vitamin D (ergocalciferol) and exercise. My T-score is -4.7 but this drug is too bad for me to ever take again! K
I have been on Prolia for 3-1/2 years. For the spine, my T-score increased from -2.8 to -2.3. The femoral neck and total femur did not change. My femoral neck is -2.1 and mean femur is -1.6. I am now 59. I was diagnosed with severe osteoporosis at the age of 41. At that time, my spine was -3.7, my femoral neck was -2.6, and my mean femur was -2.5. It has taken 17 years for me to see this type of increase. I have been on Fosomax, Forteo, Reclast, and Prolia. I saw the greatest increase during the two years that I was on Forteo. The problem with it for people on Medicare is that it's going to be covered on the prescription drug plan, and it's expensive. I don't know if the manufacturer has made any special deal for Medicare recipients.
