Info and tips about going to Mayo Clinic without an appt

Self refer. Get your daughters medical information, call Mayo and they will work with you and your dates and their availability. Showing up “cold” could be a longer process than necessary. Mayo will supply seamless care.

I hope your loved one and you are feeling better with Mayo. Mayo Clinics are so busy, that whatever you can do to help, especially with sharing results and building cooperation between Mayo consultants and your home-based health care team, will benefit you. I persisted in providing the necessary permissions for each health care provider and Mayo specialists so that necessary clinical information did get shared.

I worked at Mayo for 32 yrs and can tell you what is best. Have your home MD make a referral to Mayo - DO NOT come w/out an appt. There is a special Referral ph # for physicians to make a referral. Your home MD will have to send/fax all your records, etc. A team of physicians will review these records and decide if your are someone to be seen at Mayo. Someone will call your home MD to discuss your case and then if you're a candidate for Mayo, an appt will be set up for you. Let me know if any questions. It's rather an easy process.

It is very encouraging to hear how your persistence paid off as you were able to get all of your records from each hometown provider so that your medical information was available for your Mayo providers to see.

Best to have appt. drs there are great about working with your schedule but they need to know
Problem and history of tests, what other doctors have been seen. They want CDs of your imaging when you arrive which you take to their download station. They really are wonderful there but see many patients and you should make an appt. fax a one-page letter with important info and tell them your availability. When you are a Mayo patient some airlines don’t charge a change of itinerary fee. Expect a 10 day stay at Mayo in Rochester, MN for them to schedule tests. Good luck.

I was told by a friend who's mother had cancer that it would be quicker to be seen by going to Mayo without an appointment and waiting, than waiting weeks or months for an appointment. I hope this is still the case because my daughter is getting no where with our neurologist and rheumatologist and she is having some very severe and disturbing symptoms that need to be addressed sooner than those doctors are able to do so. I'm desperate and willing to drive to Mayo and wait for days if necessary...

Maybe that was possible in past, but doubt that will work now. You may end up driving to Mayo and be turned away.
