Anyone have tips on sun protection?

@gingerw I too am a blue-eyed, redhead -- or was a redhead. Only my hairdresser knows for sure what my color is now. If I must be in the sun I do use sunscreen but whenever possible I just stay out of it.
Which sunscreens do not find objectionable?
My daughter is very pale, she doesn't have my complexion, not rosy, but she has always been careful of the sun too. I don't think I have ever seen her with a burn of tan.

@jodeej I do not. So far I have not had any problems at all, and my PCP and dermatologist have checked me over for any signs of cancer and I'm fine. It's amazing because they say that most damage is done by the time you are 18 and I had incredible burns when I was a kid. One burn when I was in HS was second degree.

After my heart transplant, I was told by a Phoenix Mayo dermatologist that I had 45-260% more chance of getting skin cancer than other folks. That certainly made me consider everything I was doing. I have become a "hat" woman and rarely wear sleeveless shirts unless I'm outside very early in the morning. I check the UV index during the day if I plan to be out of the house and dress appropriately. I also use a facial foundation/moisturizer that contains a 40 SPF. Neutrogena makes a sheer sunscreen 55 SPF that is very lightweight and not smeary on the skin. You can pick it up at Costco. I think most brand name sunscreens are safe to use. I remember my mother smattering us with zinc oxide during summer because we spent the entire time outside for three months while growing up. You can always use that. I live in Tucson and exercise in my pool usually after 4 or 5 pm. I do use a rash guard shirt. I think it has that name to protect against any abrasion that could cause a rash, including sun rash. I am so grateful to have this time to live life and I promised my surgeon I would take care of this new heart.

@contentandwell I like the No Ad products for their coverage, besides the fact they contribute to drug abuse campaigns. Also, Avon made a general body lotion a few years back that purportedly had 15 spf. Also, Wal-Mart brand Equate has a Olay knock off that I like for my face. I have had basal cell, squamous cell (a beauty of a scar on my forehead for that!), and malignant melanoma (that is a dog bite shaped scar of 32 stitches on right forearm). Will never be able to go incognito!

I am finding more clothing with SPF. I live in FL so I use sunscreen all the time. I get Good sense SPF 30 lotion. It doesnt burn eyes is a good moisturizer and reduces age marks and brown spots...of course I don't have those...LOL!

@jeanne5009 I will have to look for this one. I wish it would take away wrinkles too!
I would imagine that Florida has a big market for clothing with a specified SPF, unlike here in NH.

@gingerw. Wow, you have been through the ringer! My husband has had a number of skin cancers on his nose and he has an olive complexion so not fair like I am. He has never paid attention to using sunscreen though. This past summer he was finally careful after having gone through radiation treatment for a particularly bad one.

I am very fair skinned too and like was mentioned I hate the feeling of most sunscreens. I stumbled across the NO-AD brand and like you I found it to be a really good non-greasy product. I tried a few oily, beachy ones, I ended up feeling oily and smelling like coconuts all day.

I’ve tried writing this 3x. I purchased a BloqUV shirt for my Daughter (she was my Donor 20 years ago) from Amazon. There are other less expensive brands there, too. This one is SPF 50. I guess I should get one for myself!

@jodeej I am not surprised that they are now in regular sporting goods stores, people have become so much more aware of how harmful it is to get sunburned. When I see people with tans I always wonder "why?" It's just not worth it.
