Migraine for 28 days and counting HELP
I have had migraines as long as I can remember. I get cluster migraines as well as status migraines. Sometimes they last a short time and others up to 3 days. I was taking Fioricet or sumatriptan which seemed to work for the most part.
This time it’s been different...I got a migraine 7/10/2018 and have had it consistently for 28 days now with Aura everyday. I have seen a Neurologist and was prescribed a variety of medications at different appointments. They are:
Prednisone 60mg (6) days then taper off for (5) days
Midrin
Naratriptan
Sumatriptan Nasal Spray
I was also given samples of Zomig.
All of the medications minus Midrin brought down the intensity of the pain for a short period but, nothing has broken the cycle yet. Midrin put me out for a day and a half but, I woke up with headache.
Neurologist has been wanting to admit me to the hospital for IV treatment but, I really don’t want to be in hospital unless I know it will for sure help. I have a lot of responsibilities at work that won’t allow a hospital stay. To top it off because I’ve had this migraine for so long my boss called me in for a meeting about my performance. I essentially got into trouble because my head hurts so bad I can’t think or function properly. I fear that my job is in jeopardy and if I am out for a few days in hospital maybe that would be the excuse to let me go.
I had an MRI which showed a hyperintense signal. Neurologist doesn’t think this is anything to be concerned about.
I went to ER on July 26th and they gave me a migraine cocktail that made me sleepy but, didn’t help the migraine. The attending physician wanted to admit me but, gave me the option to go home and rest. Migraine was slightly better in the morning but, rapidly increased intensity throughout the day.
Has anyone experienced something like this? What should I do to get rid of the migraine? Any recommendations are appreciated. Thank you in advance .

I don't like your boss! I have WMD and my thinking has slowed down some. You make me feel so grateful that I am self employed. I have turned most of my work load over to my daughter but I do have trouble staying on task so I totally understand how difficult this is for you. Different cause with same result!
Good luck with your efforts. Migraines are terrible. My daughter suffers as do several friends. I once found a coworker curled up ON HER DESK in the dark because she had a migraine but felt she could not leave. She works for the Department Of Defense. You are not alone. As well as seeking medical help I hope your are doing all the things at home that can be done to avoid the migraines. My daughter had MANY food triggers and now she has her headaches down from several a week to a few a year. She can't have any alcohol or chocolate. Some cheese bothers her also.
We humans are really fragile and must be our own best advocates for good health!

I have never had a migraine that lasted this long. It’s scary. The pressure with my job doesn’t help.
My son has had episodes like that also. Had extreme dizziness, too. He had to go to ER for I vs because of severe vomiting for days.Beware of anyone giving Compezene for nausea or any drugs in that chemical family. They are often included in the ER migraine cocktail. They can have severe neurological side affects, especially in young men. The side effects can become permanent. It is described as extreme feelings of panic. "Fright and Flight". There are much safer drugs for nausea. With my son's current Botox injections, he has the long lasting and major severe migraines, less often. I am so sorry for your situation!
When I went to ER I specially asked them not to give compezine. It gives me the same feelings. I go into a panic attack that last for several hours. It makes me feel like I need to go home RIGHT NOW! Horrible drug.
Yes, we know it is a horrible experience! The last time we were admandant about no Compezene, but then they gave a drug in the same chemical family, and within minutes my son had the same reaction. Unfortunately, it lasted for a year, with random panic attacks. Upon investigation, we found the more exposure to the drug, the greater the risk for permanent neurological damage. His finally went away, thank goodness! His life is difficult enough without drug induced issues! At Mayo, the hospital oncology unit found this in young people so often, that their protocol "prohibits" the use of these drugs for nausea. They use something else. Glad you are aware of this danger.
It’s off-label but I have been successful with 50 to 100 mgs of Trazadone. It absolutely just bandages the pain and doesn’t get rid of the migraine. However, it’s the only instant relief I have ever gotten after trying everything else under the sun. Midrin worked when I was younger but eventually stopped. My mom uses Imitrex with success. But after suffering from extended pain like you’re describing, I took a chance on using Trazadone for it and it worked!
I currently take Trazadone for chronic back pain & neuropathy to help me sleep. So far it hasn't helped.
It amazes me that Dr's know about this side effect and still choose to order it.
Cost/benefit. Everything has side effects. Ethanol, nicotine, caffeine ( caffeine is THE most preferred drug in the world.), all have side effects. Sunshine even has side effects. Living has side effects. Check with Medscape- NOT the internet. Ask your Doctor. Average life span in 1900 was about 48 (but no Med side effects). From a guy who has been through 20 years of non- stop medical treatment. Take care my friend. Peace Dr Ron - Your well-being is my commitment
Understood. It just makes me feel panicked and crazy. I get very sleepy which isn't a bad thing but, going in and out of sleep and a panicked state is miserable.
