IT band syndrome after knee replacement
I had both knees replaces last month. Right on 6/4 and left on 6/13. The right knee has done great. But the left has had issues. This week both PT and the surgeon's nurse said I have IT band syndrome. PT put a strip of K-tape down the side of my leg and suggests ice massage to the area. And the nurse showed me a stretching exercise to do. I am wondering if others have had this problem and how it was handled and how long it took to get better. The pain behind my knee prevents me from raising my leg while walking.

@gobigorgohome I really could not be more happy with how good that knee feels. When I do a lot of exercise the other knee will often hurt slightly but not the Conformis. My orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Wolfgang Fitz, is one of the developers of the Conformis. I was told about him before my first TKR but I was in extreme pain 24/7 so I took a doctor who could do it sooner.

Contentandwell. I’m happy to hear about your satisfaction with the Conformis knee. Overall, it sounds like you’re doing very well. Both of my knees are so bad my Dr felt it would be best to do them at the same time. I realize PT. will be a bit more difficult but the idea of having two good knees soon sounds wonderful. My surgeon, Dr. Driessnack, has been doing Conformis for many years. My timing couldn’t have been better. He is retiring in June. Just got in under the wire.
I had a partial knee replacement 8 months ago . Have good ROM .But struggle to walk far and need a stick as get pain on the lateral side and swelling above knee cap .I need to wear a knee support ,but this is not tight when walking and standing still is a nightmare swells a lot . I think I may have ITB syndrome. Does anyone else have the same problems as this ?
@gosabi0212 You are lucky to get "in under the wire". I presume he has an associate who will do your ongoing care. I hope you are comfortable with the associate also.
You are brave to do both knees at the same time. There are not too many doctors around here who will do that. If I needed both at the same time though I would have loved to have had that done. When my L knee was done, my R knee wasn't bad enough for a TKR yet.
Looking forward to hearing how you are doing.

I had a bi-lateral (both knees) knee replacement on 4/2. Now 7 weeks in, I’ve had generally great results. Great flexion in both knees (135 degrees +) and strength recovering nicely. Though I now have an IT band issue just below knee joint on left knee. Just like @kneelady, this is causing pain, at times intense at night. Treating with hip/glute strengthening and ice massage. However, I am concerned this is not going to be an easy fix?
Hi @swykle - Welcome to Connect! Congratulations on your ROM and strength. I've had two TKRs and from my experience, it sounds as if you are doing great for 7 weeks. I had a lot of luck with acupuncture during my recovery. I've heard others rave about myofascial release. And of course, water therapy is always our friend! Have you tried any of those with your IT band pain?
Just read your note on it band. . I have same issue. TKR 5/8/2019. Same response from OS. Wait 6 mo then cort. Sleeping and driving car pain. Your response would be appreciated.
Hey @dickiedo - Welcome to Connect! So glad you found this group. And I'm so sorry to hear about your pain after having your TKR. I've had two - most recent in January of this year. I know it is so hard to believe, but things really do continue to improve. For me 3 months was a real milestone but everybody is different. Is your pain pretty constant or just at night? Have you talked to your OS?
Have seen PA on two occasions. She stated it and takes time. PT etc. pain when trying to lay on left side sleeping. TKR was Right knee. Difficulty driving. Tried all positions. Painful applying brakes. Range of motion 0 and 115. swimming 3 times a week.
Nice to have someone with similar issue.

@dickiedo Like @debbraw, I too have had two TKRs but not had that specific problem. For me 2 months was a huge milestone on my last TKR in October 2017, I was in some extreme pain often before that, pain that even brought tears to my eyes, and that scared me. My orthopedic doctor was on top of it though and seeing me every two weeks until the pain finally subsided, almost overnight! We are all different and all heal at different rates so I hope you will have the same thing happen to you, that suddenly the pain will be greatly diminished.
I was extremely determined that it would be better because my daughter’s wedding was quickly approaching. I don’t know if determination can help, but it can’t hurt!
By the way, have you tried putting a pillow between your legs when sleeping on your side? It really helps. I did it after my TKR and I’m doing it again while my fractured femur heals. The orthopedic doctor suggested it.
