Social Anxiety Disorder

Posted by mmak @mmak, Jul 19, 2018

I have recently been diagnosed with fibromyalgia which got me reading a lot on depression and anxiety, I'm someone who likes my own space, I only want to be alone at home with my son and husband, I don't like going to social events, the sad thing is I work with events, but I always make sure once the event is done I go home immediately, I get sore throats, mouth sores, lightheaded every time before an event, I don't like using public toilets, I get sweaty palms and feet, I'm just uncomfortable around people, lately I have started seeing a psychiatrist, cause lately I've been experiencing, overthinking, stressing a lot, feeling depressed, deja vu and sometimes I overthink to an extend its like I experience noises in my head, when I'm around people, I feel like my head is getting heavy especially when people all talk at the same time, honestly I feel like I'm loosing my mind. I haven't been diagnosed with social anxiety disorder but all the symptoms point to me, how can I know for sure I have it, and what helps?

I have the same emotions as above. I like my privacy. Sounds like panic attacks anddepression....at any rate, get your hearing checked out, that could be a contributing factor. If you like to talk and like your psychiatrist fine. I have been to several but I dont like to talk and havent been helped that much. That darned fibro...I ALSO HAVE it and no one seems to know anything.Perhaps you need a nice rest in a beautiful but not busy place. Probably need some sort of l"llight" medication to relax. Take a break if you can from your job. Think of you first. It is not easy but it will get better.

Hello @mmak

You have expressed your feelings remarkably! Thank you for sharing yourself here on Connect. My name is Teresa and I'm a volunteer mentor on Connect and I'm not a medical/psychological professional, but just a patient.

You mentioned that you just started seeing a psychiatrist. That can be a very helpful relationship. I am wondering if some talk therapy would also be a good idea? You might check with your psychiatrist and see if he/she can recommend a psychologist who can engage you in some insight-oriented therapy.

Also, have you checked with your medical doctor to be sure that there are not any physical problems that might be contributing to these anxiety issues? Given some of the physical symptoms (especially the mouth sores, sore throat, etc.) you have mentioned, this might be a good idea. Have you started taking any new meds that might be contributing to your symptoms? (A pharmacist might be a good resource to answer this question as well.)

These are all just thoughts, I hope that you find some answers soon.

Please keep in touch, I look forward to hearing from you again.

Thank you Mattie, I will be starting a 14 days leave to try rest, unfortunately for now those are the only days I can afford to take.

I have actually done all the blood tests and x-rays I suffer from chronic neck and shoulder pains, the blood tests showed I have vitamin D deficiency. I'm seeing my psychiatrist tomorrow and he has mentioned sending me to a psychologist as well, it's really all overwhelming.

Yes, I'm sure that it is overwhelming - that is very understandable! I can see that you are already involved in a conversation about Lyrica and that Moderator, Justin, @JustinMcClanahan has tagged several Members who have mentioned taking Lyrica. I'm looking forward to seeing the responses you receive from them as they have first-hand experience. Please remember, however, that medications work differently for each individual.

You mention a low Vit D level. Do you know what you level is? (It should be listed on the lab report). I also have a very low Vit D level and no matter how much Vit D supplements I take, it just doesn't seem to work. If you care to share more, have you had any other health problems in your background that might be affecting your health? Any family history that might be similar to the problems you are having now? I encourage you to keep searching for answers. I have had a number of rather rare disorders that took a number of years to diagnose. I understand how difficult this can be.

In the meantime, the talk therapy might be very helpful to give you support during this time.

Please keep in touch!

@mattie Totally agree with "that darned fibro" has pretty much destroyed my senior years. Keep hearing it is just depression and how I need to snap out of it and count my blessings. Being invalidated is cruel.

@hopeful33250 thank you for your response. I will definitely stay in touch. I do research a lot and will keep doing that, so far I do not know of any family history, but like you said I feel the therapy will help.
