Knee Replacement - Getting Prepared

Posted by Fjkphx @fjkphx, Jun 27, 2018

I will soon have first knee replacement. I wonder what type of info the surgeon should be presenting regarding the new knee. He has not offered and I have not asked. Also wonder what level of care any of you required post surgery. I live alone and wonder what kind of challenges I will face. Thanks for the input.

Hi @123dianap, welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. You will notice that I moved your inquiry to an ongoing discussion about getting prepared for knee replacement surgery. I did this so you can connect with other individuals going through the same process. Can you tell us a little more about your situation? Were you told that you needed a total knee replacement?

@123dianap you don’t say where you are looking for a doctor. If you are looking in the Boston area I have a really great one. His name is Dr. Wolfgang Fitz and he’s at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. When I was in an inner waiting room, waiting for an X-ray I spoke to a couple of other people there and he literally has people coming to him from all over the country, he’s that good.

I ice then take a hot shower with a shower chair to stretch my leg out! It really helps in the morning and before I go to bed. I get a good stretch and it feels great

I had a knee replacement of a prior knee replacement done on my RIGHT knee/leg, the first replacement was done in 1986 by a very good orthopedic doctor and everything during the years normal, in 2012 the artificial implant loosened up and it was redone by a Dr in Danbury CT, that now made my leg 1.5" longer, after month i started to get pains on my LEFT knee, behind the knee, received all kinds of injections to alleviate the pain, the injections only worked for a short time, got them all including some form of a Rooster Cone that was the latest/ new discovery, all worked only for a period of two to three weeks, and after the pain returned that i have been living with now for all these years.
Lately i can not use my Left leg to go up the stairs, this is just from the pain and now also many times loosing my balance and getting harder to walk now also.
one doctor a while back suggested that I get a knee replacement on the good knee, but the knee feels fine is just the muscle behind the knee, all this time taking a lot of Tylenol and Ibuprofen 600Mg Tab for he pain, i am getting to old to go thru another knee replacement now!
Was told it is a small muscle behind the knee, wonder if they can operate or cut. ..... Any suggestions?
