Post colorectal cancer pet scan showing spot on liver

Posted by minabird @minabird, Jun 12, 2018

I am 6 months post colorectal cancer surgery. I had my follow up PET scan and there is an area showing on my
Liver. I had the same thing prior to my surgery and an MRI showed nothing. I am having another MRI next week. I am concerned that this continues to appear on the PET. Has anyone else had this happen?

@minabird I have spots on my pancreas and lungs they watch, since my colorectal cancer surgery too..They been watching then for over 2 1/2 years. Nothing ever changes each time. I would rather be watched than ignored.
Have they ever suggested wanting to get a biopsy of the liver spot? You want to ask them that.
Can you also keep us posted on the outcome?
Best of luck

Hello Jackie,

Thank you for your response. My doctor said depending on what the MRI shows next week he will consider a biopsy. Might be the best thing so I can not have the nagging fear each time I have a PET scan. Have they given you any idea why yoI have spots that show up? ~Mina

@minabird I just try not worry about about the spots. Otherwise, I will be weaving baskets making myself crazy with every non-perfect spot on my body. When they did my pet scan the cancer in my colon didn't light up. however the lymph nodes in my chest lit up. Both were unrelated and there was no symptoms of either cancer showing up on me where you knew something was wrong. I have spots on my pancreas and lungs but they stay the same with each CT scan, So I just try not to worry about it. I don't think anyone out there has perfect organs?

I got the results of the MRI. The spot on the liver showed there also. The Dr believes it to be 1 cm. I am scheduled for a biopsy next week.

@minabird Well it's better to have it checked out. Question Though?? Is this the same area 6 months ago they thought there was something on your liver? Then it turned out to be nothing? Are they able to cut out the 1 cm spot since it's so small, when they do the biopsy?

I’m not sure if it is the same location. I don’t believe they will do anything on Friday but take the sample for biopsy. I am told by my surgeon (that did my colorectal surgery) that if i need surgery I will need to go to the Mayo Clinic. I am disappointed that he could not do the surgery (if I need it) but understand that I need the best team possible and know Mayo is top notch . I have been keeping myself busy, the waiting is tough.

Hope your results are good. I had breast cancer in 2002 and I had a module show up after my mastectomies and treatment. It also wasn’t there on Pet scam before treatment. They just do cat scan yearly to make sure it doesn’t get bigger

My biopsy came back positive. I am to start chemo ASAP . My surgeon is putting a port in on Tuesday. Will see the oncologist this week and get more direction (when chemo will start, how often and how long). Trying to keep positive, one small spot, detected early, no symptoms. Praying the chemo is successful.
