Hand osteoarthritis with mucous cysts

Posted by bonnieh218 @bonnieh218, May 4, 2018

Has anyone with osteoarthritis in the hands developed any mucous cysts? I have these cysts on my finger that my primary care says is from osteoarthritis. He says there’s nothing you can do with them however, don’t pop them because of possible infection. They have become painful and burst open by themselves when they get so large. They drain and then regrow again. Wondering if anyone has heard of this and which type of doctor would be the right kind to visit.

Thank you for your information. Would you explain what your epsom salt solution is? How much water and salt? How often did you soak? I appreciate any information. These cysts are painful the bigger they get. Then they burst open and drain and that relieves the pain but they just regrow again.

The dermatologist has now injected steroids 3x and since it always comes right back, time for the hand surgeon.

I have been told by doctors that after surgery to remove mucous cysts they will recur. That’s why I decided not to go that route.
Just by luck and self discovery I found a solution for me. So far, knock on wood, it is still working. Earlier in this thread I did post my experience and what worked for me.

I have a mucous cyst on my finger near my last joint. It is not near the fingernail at all. The cyst just pops on its own when it gets to a larger size, I've never had it popped by anyone. The clear gel drains out and I am left with raw skin where I put a little Neosporin on it and a Band-Aid for a couple days. Then the cyst starts growing again and the process repeats itself. Last month, after the cyst had popped and drained on its own, I started using Dr. Teals Lotion with Epson salts in it on my hands for my osteoporosis. This last week I noticed my cyst is gone and hasn't started regrowing at all. Going to keep up with this lotion and closely follow whatever happens with this cyst. Maybe this might be of some help to you. All the best!

I am new to this site but happy to hear that some of you have gotten rid of their cysts. I just developed a mucous cyst a few months ago. While most unattractive it is not very painful and thus far has not burst. If someone can tell me about which Dr teals lotion with epson salts they used, I would be most appreciative. Also did anyone soak their fingers in epson salts and how much did they use and for how long. I also have several" herberden nodes" but was told there was nothing I could do for them?

This is the lotion I was using and continue to use. I get it at WalMart.
I had the mucous cyst on my finger for probably nine months or so. It would grow and then burst on its own about every 4-5 weeks. When it would burst I would put some neosporin on it with a bandaid for a couple days because the skin was raw. I can’t believe it hasn’t come back now since the last time it burst. Other than that I just used this Dr Teals lotion on my hands everyday.

Believe the actual term is "synovial cyst", variety of other names as well. Related to osteoarthritis in the finger joints. I was diagnosed by dermatologist who did steroid injection X2 which did not work long term. Referred to hand surgeon who did surgery for permanent resolution. He informed me it is rare for them to return after surgical treatment. I feel my arthritis pain is now worse in this joint, I had to go off Celebrex prior to knee replacement several weeks ago and the finger joint was awful.

Hi, @bonnieh218 -- thanks for sharing a bit about the mucous cysts you are seeing on your finger related to your osteoarthritis. I thought I'd introduce you to other members on Connect who have talked about osteoarthritis they or a loved one have experienced to see if they are familiar with this situation and what type of doctor they'd recommend seeing for this issue, like @gailb @ees1 @jeannegordon4 @suzie2017 @darlia @danybegood1. @johnbishop may also have some thoughts.

Is this something you've been dealing with for some time, @bonnieh218, or is this new for you?

I have a similar problem at the time I didn't know what it was, and i ended up picking at it. Once I searched up what it was I have been seeking treatment. Is there anything I can do to cure it in anyway?
