Adults On The Autism Spectrum

Posted by Mamacita, Alumna Mentor @mamacita, Apr 29, 2018

Maybe you were really shy as a child. Perhaps you took home a huge stack of books from the school library, read them, and returned them the next day. Or did your best friend find you crying in your closet, unable to answer the question "Why?" At any rate, your life could be traced to the Self-Help section of the local bookstore. Unfortunately, most of the books were not much help. ADHD seemed to fit, at times. Your shrink said you might be Bi-Polar, although she wasn't really certain. All you knew was that you rarely fit in, anywhere. One day at work, it hit you square in the face: I don't speak these people's language! Really, it was like you were all playing this game, and everyone knew the rules but you. You couldn't tell a joke, and you never "got" any joke your co-worker tried to tell you. People started getting annoyed with you, because you had a memory like a steel trap. They didn't appreciate it when you called them on the carpet. Who knew? This was my life, and worse. I finally aced several tests that pointed me to the answer to my questions. The Autism Spectrum. Guess what? Little kids with Autism grow up to be Adults with Autism. Diagnosed late in life? This is the place for you!

Hi there, @kdo0827 , good to see you in this neck of the woods! Come and hang out at the old watering hole here any time you want!

Normally I am not such an Eyore -istic personality. Normally I am somewhere between Pooh and Tigger. Winter is often a tough time for me. It was somewhat rough this year as we are taking care of our disabled daughter, who is on oxygen 24/7. We are hopeful that there are still good days ahead, in spite of the realities surrounding us. We are indeed as someone so graciously reminded me recently, better together. We are here for one another. Thanks again for your appearance. Come back again!

Good day to you, me lovelies. How are you? How can I help you? Just a quick note. Be aware of your surroundings. Be aware of who you surround yourself with. Don't reveal everything about your soul unless you are very, very sure you can trust completely.

Not to alarm you, but some of my friends have been hacked, verbally attacked, and emotionally devastated recently. Some of these folks host groups on Facebook. Others have organizations whose sole purpose is to help others. Some help the Autism Community exclusively.

I say all this for several reasons. Auties are basically kind and trusting. Even when someone shows us they are not worthy of our trust, we miss them. We wish things could have been different. We think "What if there's something I can do to "fix" them?"

People have to want to change. All our efforts to "help" them are to no avail if they don't see the error of their ways. I recently had to enforce some boundaries in a relationship. This individual totally did a 180' turn. I had to block and unfriend that person. It hurt me so badly. It is like a death to me. I am grieving, but I am going to be ok.

Retribution is this individual's joy and delight. They feel like they are on a mission. Everyone but them are wrong. So if any of you on here should get any negative information whatsoever about us here, please let me know. You can ask me anything. My life is an open book. I have very few secrets left. This should be a safe place for us all.

Adios, amigos.

@gingerw , thank you for responding to my post. I tried to private message our wonderful Director Colleen Young yesterday. Despite my best efforts, the site would not allow me to message her. So, I had to try something different. I will try to message Colleen again soon. I hope you are having a good day. I always enjoy your responses to other people, as well as to me. Talk to you more soon, I hope!

Good morning, Auties and allies. It is Tuesday, and here we are in the second week of January, 2019. What are your plans for this year? Do they involve school? A new job? A new Grandchild?

Have you embarked on a new exercise routine, perhaps? Or have you decided to volunteer your services as a reading coach to your neighborhood school? Opportunities are everywhere.

Take some time and give it some thought. You might just find some new friends waiting for you! You know what we say, "We are better together."

@mamacita Good morning to you! I hope this finds you well. Plans for this year? Well, stay as healthy as possible, definitely. The reports from two of my specialists yesterday say my tests show I am maintaining good kidney function, such a blessing. Biggest plan for this year comes in June when I journey to Rhode Island to become a Certified Zentangle Teacher. So looking forward to that! What are in your plans this year, my friend?

Wow, @gingerw , I, like @parus, am truly impressed! I will be taking courses in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy as well as Pastoral Counselling. We will be getting ready for my Grandaughter to make her appearance into this world. Playing the new organ at church. Trying to eat healthy and live healthy. Hoping to work on my Volunteer Mentor skills. Happy New Year!

Thank you, Angel girl, Teresa. You take the time to let us know when you have read our posts. That is not the easiest thing to do. We all are busy trying to do self care so that we can be a help to others. One cannot pour from an empty cup. We all have jobs and responsibilities that take up valuable time. Most of us here have conditions that must be monitored and adjusted as needed. Yet my heart, and I know yours, finds its way back here to give what we can to help another individual.

Thank you, and bless you. For your continuous service to others.
