Diabetic Neuropathy progressing?

Posted by lyssia @lyssia, Apr 15, 2018

Hello have had diabetes type 2 for about 4 years now, plus several years of prediabetes. I take Farxiga daily. Have been able to keep my BG numbers below 160 and at the beginning of the year have gone low carb so my BG is usually around 69-92 now. I have the burning feet off and on but lately my calve/s have been feeling cold/numb and I was wondering if this might be neuropathy also? I was wondering if others have had this experience? How your neuropathy progressed, symptoms,

Hi @inspired123, One thing I can tell you is that you are not alone. I have neuropathy but it's not caused by diabetes. I believe diabetic neuropathy is the one diagnosis of neuropathy that you have a good chance of reversing if you catch it early and you make some lifestyle changes. Here's an article you may find helpful:

Similar to the question by @ethanmcconkey, are you able to share a little more about your diabetes and any treatments you are following?

Hello, @inspired123 - I moved your discussion on diabetic neuropathy to this existing discussion on the topic because I think you'll get more responses to your question about whether others have had pain and numbness in their legs from this type of neuropathy here.
@cehunt57 @abd123 @lyssia @chandyjohn1@madera @grahamb @rwinney @joanmargaret44 and others have talked about diabetic neuropathy in themselves or a loved one and might have some comments on their symptoms.

Has anything provided relief from your pain and numbness thus far, inspired123?

I take lyrica for my Neuropathy but my legs still hurt, my doctor tells me it is from the high sugar levels. I was just recently in the ER for sugar level of 427, so as you can see it it is not under control. Has anybody heard of a doctor called an Endocrinologist who spealizes in the treatment of Diabetes? Has anyone tried it and had any success

Hi, @inspired123 - I'd also like for you to meet @retiredteacher, who has dealt with neuropathy and also would have some good suggestions of Mayo Clinic Connect discussions where you might talk with other members who can speak from their personal experiences about seeing an endocrinologist and whether seeing one has helped them.

Has the pregabalin (Lyrica) had any side effects thus far, inspired123?

@inspired123 Welcome. I am @retiredteacher, Carol and I am a Type 2 Diabetic. At this time I am in a quandary myself. I had an appointment with my endocrinologist Monday for a regular check. I was afraid my A1C would be out of control because I have not been as strict with my diabetes diet during the holidays. It was up .2 but still within range of what it should be. So, anywhere between 6.0 and 7.0 is controlled. I was very happy to be in the range. Right now I am not sure I have neuropathy in my feet. My PCP decided that diagnosis, but my endo says it is not neuropathy, and he suggested I see a podiatrist. So as soon as I can I am going to make an appointment with the foot doctor. The pain in my feet is like walking on broken glass. However, it is not as bad sometimes and it is others. I say that good days it can be a 3 and bad days it's over 10. So right now, I am going to have to wait and see what the podiatrist says. I do not take any medicine for my diabetes or even for the foot pain. If I could find something that would work, I would try it. If my feet didn't hurt, I would be over the moon with happiness. Right now, I cannot exercise because walking on my painful feet is just too much. My idea when there is a problem like this is to see what different doctors say. If they do not agree, then somewhere there is a doctor who can help. From all I have read about neuropathy, it is not a health problem that can be treated the same way for everyone---one size does not fit all. I think persistence in trying to find something that gives relief is my choice for help. I wish I could give you a definitive answer, but I can't. Just keep on searching and don't give up. I hope you can get some answers.
Carol

Good afternoon @inspired123 Just Monday, we met with an endocrinologist at the Mayo Research group. Omar is working on a project that is essentially an ice breaker for those diabetes patients who are less than comfortable talking with a clinician. Kind of opens the door gently. Be safe and protected. Chris

For those with Diabetes Type II and peripheral neuropathy, I thought you might find this Mayo Clinical Trial interesting. Please click on the link to read more about it.
