Alternatives for pain management

Posted by grandmaR @grandmar, Mar 31, 2018

Hello!
I was wondering if anyone tried cryo therapy or medical marijuana for pain management. If you did, how did they/it work?
Thanks

Welcome to the Mayo Connect community. I'm a Volunteer Mentor and am not a medical professional and cannot give medical diagnosis or medical solutions to problems. I do offer my experience, knowledge, and support for members of the community. I look forward to getting to know you better.

I am very impressed that you are working to withdraw from your morphine regimen using CBD oil. I have found CBD to be very valuable in my own withdrawal from Tramadol. I agree that you may need to seek a stronger version of CBD:THC since you are on such strong pain medications. Would you be willing to share with us the reason you need pain management? Understanding your situation will help us to be more helpful in our feedback and support of you.
- How long have you needed medication for pain?
- What is your physical situation?
- Do you live in a state where marijuana is legal?
- Is your physician aware that you're using a CBD:THC drug? The reason I ask this is because my physician told me if they drug test me & I ever show marijuana or CBD in my urine, he would stop prescribing other pain drugs and kick me out of the Pain Clinic. That just made me more determined to get off the prescriptions and use only CBD:THC for my pain. I have been successful.

Please help us get to know you better in the near future. You will find acceptance, non judgemental support and lots of ideas as part of Mayo Connect.

@pschoen, I am sorry you are having troubles with withdrawal symptoms - both physical and mental. I experienced some minor symptoms after my tapering post ankle-fusion surgery. @mamacita and @lioness bring up an important point, are you withdrawing and tapering under the advisement of a medical professional? It is important to taper under the instruction of a professional because the symptoms can be intense for some individuals.

The Mg++ I use and Vit D with Ca+ (use gummies due to gastroparesis). Is something in the pickle juice that helps Linda for cramps? I like cucumbers but not pickles lol? I will try anything but I really do not like pickles...The picture idea is a good suggestion. I use visualization (close my eyes, visualize a scene and mediate). That I will try. Any ideas you have please forward. I did sign up for your blog and perused it a little. Will do more when I have time. It is seems very useful and informative. The videos are instructional and excellent.

@jlfisher56 I did alot of canning when married an pickles are made with tiny cucumbers in a brine with vinegar water Kosher salt this pickles them. You can use zucchini for pickles also. It's the vinegar that helps for cramps as well as mustard which has vinegar of course I guess you could just make a solution of water, vinegar and sweetener probably would do the same.

Withdrawal symptoms are bad when coming off certain medications. I am in my 7th month of coming off Lyrica. I have severe anxiety depression and some agoraphobia. I’m going through hell. I can’t shake it. I’ve never thought suicide until going through all this. I struggle daily. I do use CBD oil and Ativan does it help who knows. I have more bad days then good. I’m under psych care seeing a therapist and a nurse practitioner med specialist. I just can’t shake it, I keep busy but I’d rather be curled up in a ball or in a hole in the ground. They told me it can take about 2 years before you begin to feel better. All my body chemicals are out of whack. I was on Lyrica for 5 years for trigeminal nerve itch from shingles. So I wish you the best and strong days

Hi, @grandmar -- sounds like you are in a lot of pain, and I'm sorry to hear that.

We definitely have some members who have tried some alternatives for pain management -- cryotherapy, medical marijuana or other remedies. I'd like to invite some of them to come talk about how they worked, like @jimhd @cdcc @paladin121 @rmeddings @leh09 @allisonsnow @lauren123 @marield65 @virtuous69 @ayankeeinnm @jenapower. @sandytoes14 may also have some thoughts for you.

@grandmar -- have you tried any alternative pain therapies? If so, how did they go for you?

Have you ever looked into stem cell therapy?

Has anyone on this site ever heard of or used Artic Blast? I sure hope I get a response, it seems I never do.

Hello @jjwest -- I haven't used Artic Blast but I have used similar products like Biofreeze and Salonpas Gel. It helped with a muscle cramp/pain but it was temporary for me. Hopefully some others that have used it will share their experience. Here is what Drugs.com says about Artic Blast pain drops:

NIH also has some information on the product:
