I have neuropathy, primarily my right foot bothers me a lot, feel I'm wearing a. Rey tight shoe, burning and tingling, it's terrible.
Are there any supplements to take to help with this, mine started 14 months ago, however, it went away last June and returned in December ?.

Hi Jim, I have similar issues. My specialist at UofTX Medical school placed me on Cellcept, 2,000mg daily. It is an immune suppressant and I've been on it for 2 years. My pain, feet and hands, has much improved. I also take 600mg of Gabapentin daily. But I am left with weakness and incredible balance issues. (4 falls, hip replacement, broken arm and foot and 5 cracked vertebrates. She is now considering infusions of forgot name. Hope this info helps.

Jim, pls keep me updated on what you find out on Cellcept. I've been on this for several years and recently I started backing off with no change noticed.

Klaus, what were you diagnosed for?

Hi, I have peripheral neuropathy, vasculitis, and essential thrombocythemia, among other issues that aren't pertinent here. The Cellcept is treatment for the neuropathy and vasculitis, and the thrombocythemia is treated by hydroxyurea (kills platelets to keep them under control.)

Hello @jlor, welcome to Mayo Connect. We are glad you found us and hoping you can find some answers. Can I ask how you found out you have neuropathy in your feet? Did your doctor have any nerve tests done to determine if you have neuropathy?

Mayo Clinic has a symptom checker that you may want to take a look at:

Also, burning/tingling feet can be an indication of diabetic neuropathy if you have diabetes. I'm tagging @gman007 and @jimhd to see if they have any suggestions. In the meantime you might want to read through the active discussion "Living with Neuropathy - Welcome to the group". Here is the link to the discussion:

Hi @jlor -- that's a good question. Did the neurologist give you any follow up suggestions or appointments as to what might be causing the burning feet? There is another discussion you might want to read through - Burning Feet Syndrome:

Mayo Clinic does have some information here on Burning Feet Causes:

Hope this helps.

Yrs, I have a follow up early next month. Anyways, this started in early December 2016. Went away in June 2017' and symptoms returned in December last year. Neurologists last year could not find cause. I took the liberty and tested negative , just in case, for HIV , after symptoms started in January, february, march and April , 2017' for 4th gen tests. All negatuve. now these symptoms are back?. He put me on gabapentin, let's see if it helps. It is basically my right foot is the worst.

Jim, the funny thing, if it is funny, is that I'm able to sleep well at night. I wear the quell unit, it helped last year , not helping much now, it is basically like a distraction. Have tried lyrica, gabapentin, last year, now taking duloxetine and tramadol. No help so far.
Was looking into the implant. Was looking into the BURSTDR STIMULATION,
Also driving is becoming very painful, as it is basically my right foot. tested negative for small fiber neuropathy last year. Again, these symptoms went away from June to December last year. I'll try anything to get some relief.

Please do yourself a favor, try the cold laser therapy device for $129 from Amazon.(you can return it if it isn't working for you) My 3 sisters in law, and myself, have neuropathy and are very pleased with the results. The podiatrists co pays were breaking us. Now each own our devices. Just try, I don't take any pain pills anymore. (I had Gabapentin and tried Tramadol with very little success) I do 6 minutes on each foot on high power and I sleep like a baby through the night unlike years of waking up with burning feet.

@jlor Hi there, I didn't read most of the posts but I read your 1st post asking about supplements for foot Neuropathy.
Well there are supplements for just about everything but the question is what type of Neuropathy you have & what types of medications or treatments have you tried for this issue? I'm allergic to all Cymbalta, Gabapentin, & Lyrica. Horrible side effects.

I myself have mild neuropathy in my right foot mainly the balls of my rt foot & & the toe next to big toe & middle toe go numb every so often.
My Pain mgmt recommend I try L-Carnitine they are amino acids. They help with Neuropathy, I started then abt 2 weeks ago & I'm feeling less pins & needles in my 2 toes. So far. But everything takes time. So I try my best.
I take medical cannabis capsules & gummies & they help soo much. I'm thankful for my good day's. I know I have chronic pain & even though I'm still Yngr 55yr old female, I need a full knee replacement surgery but can't get it until I move to a 1st floor unit or at least an elevator bldng. When u don't make enough $$$ to pay rent & disabled, & live in sane NYC apt for 47yrs. It's not exactly a piece of cake. Not to mention I can't go dwn more than 3 x tops in 1 week. I'm tired & in pain myself. I wish & hope this post helps you. Many happy thoughts, Mimi.

Hi Mimi, my wife (who has PN in her feet) and I both have taken acetyl l carnitine (ALC) for at least 2 years now. I am a true believer in the effectiveness of ALC. I first read about how it aids mitochondria in processing fats for energy and started us both on it. Soon after I began taking it I noticed an unusual boost in energy. Specifically I had been noticing that in the last few years I had become less energetic on my morning walk. I have a set route in a park that I do that has several steep-ish hills. Climbing them had become a chore and I found myself not enjoying the work of puffing my way up them as much as before. With the ALC I went back to where I was several years earlier energy wise, and climbing hills became fun again. And this effect has lasted for the two years or so since I started on ALC. My wife takes so many things it's harder for her to attribute any benefit to any specific supplement. But I can say that her energy has been boosted as well from the combined effect of 4 or 5 different mitochondria boosting supplements, ALC being among them.

So that is my story regarding ALC. I hope you continue to see a benefit. We take r lipoic acid as well which is supposed to have a synergistic effect with ALC. I understand what you are saying about having limited funds and a lot of (most) supplements are not cheap. But the other two mitochondria boosting supplements we take that also have had noticeable benefits (and are therefore worth the $$$ if you can afford them) are Niagen and Mito-Q. The best deal on Niagen that I have found is from the Tru Niagen company if you buy a 6 month supply at a time. Mito-Q is very expensive also but my wife swears by it. It works as a super Co-Q10 and has the advantage of crossing the blood-brain barrier and working in the brain itself.

Sorry for the long-winded response. Best, Hank

Hank- Thanks for the affirmation on ALC and LA. I started using both about 3 years ago to assuage the pain in my left leg and foot. It helps to understand the body chemistry effects. Have a great day.
