Reactive Hypoglycemia & Chronic Sinusitis
Can anyone offer any advice or information?
Everyday is constant struggle, After I eat any food with the slightest bit of sugar i gain all of the below symptoms;
-Lightheadness (almost like a dream state)
-Sinus Pressure
-Lethergy
-Heart palpitations
-Increased Phlegm (Post nasal drip)
-Gritty/itchy eyes
-Blurred Vision
If I keep consuming sugar I will get a sinus infection ive had 3 in the space of 5 months in which ive had antibotics and steroid drops to treat each time but the only difference is it turns my green phlegm back to thick white. I still get the puffy checks, sinus pressure, fatigue and so on.
I began the Keto diet to try and cut out sugar but then i get symptoms of hypoglycemia from lack of sugar.
It might be worth mentioning that i also keep getting thrush and have had antheltes foot in the 5 months this has been happening. Ive also had a few instances of random shooting pains down my legs and in my knees and 2 or 3 times an intense stabbing pain under my left rib which lasted a few minutes. (Im not sure if any of that is related)
Im desperate its effecting every aspect of my life relationships, work performance/Attendence and motivation.
Male, 23 years old. No instances of any other illness before September 2017

Your symptoms are complex and could come from many medical reasons. I suggest you get a comprehensive examination by a good internist to begin with then go to any specialists he/she recommends. Your other choice is to go to a comprehensive medical center that has several specialists evaluate you together as a team to efficiently diagnose the problem by using best practices and develop a plan that is holistic. It's incredibly important that you get a complete assessment especially since you're so young. Wishing you all the best. 🙂
Hi, @danny95 -- you had mentioned you were going to see a specialist for some of the challenges you were experiencing with reactive hypoglycemia and chronic sinusitis. How did that go? Did you get the tests you were hoping for?
Hi, @danny95 -- just wanted to touch base and see what you learned when you saw the specialist about all the symptoms you were experiencing with the slightest bit of sugar?
@stfnwtl89 -- how are things going for your daughter? Have you decided whether to go to an endocrinologist?
@hayley3 -- how are you doing?
Hi @danny95 I am experiencing the same symptoms , it is horrendous every day, have you hd any luck with this ? Any advice greatly appreciated
I don't normally offer treatment suggestions. But after 15 years of chronic sinusitis that doctors were unable to help with, I've seen significant improvement using an L. Sakei probiotic powder I bought on Amazon. I would say 75% improvement over 6 months. My sinusitis is now a manageable condition.
Over the last 15 years, I tried every treatment recommendation my doctor gave me, without improvement. Surgery was not an option. Only the L. Sakei helped. My quality of life is now much improved. And yet it does sadden me how long and horribly I suffered before finding something that helped.
such great advice @nursemaven. Well wishes to you!
Hello @danny95, Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect! Have you been to an Rhinologist for evaluation?
I have always had post nasal drip but now it is chronic and my eyes (recently cataract surgery) are itchy and blurry. What is a glucose meter? I have some probiotic tablets but not L Sakei. I live in a condo so cannot break into walls. It does seem to be an unusually heavy dust season in the Pacific Northwest. How does one find an endocrinologist?
I've been reading a lot about Cerebral Spinal Fluid leak that appears to mimick other symptoms and diseases and often goes undiagnosed or misdiagnosed for long periods of time while the patient suffers and is told it's all in their head, well quite literally it just might be. After all sorts of tests seeing multiple doctors and specialists (ENT, Internal Medicine, Emergency room (for the Blood CT urine tests) all of which come back as "normal (and that is the case with CSF) everything from being told I have allergies, acute sinusitis, depression, anxiety seeing an ENT having a CT of my head. ruled out it is not sinus told it is neurological my primary referred me to a neurologist and cited Ataxia and Memory disorder as most recent diagnosis. All the symptoms are there, form clear fluid nasal drip, neck pain, ear pain, vision issues, concentration issues, extreme chronic fatigue unable to drive light sensitivity and sound sensitivity, insomnia, headaches brain fog all of it just recently saw this post and I wonder am I wasting time seeing a neuro? Why is it is so difficult to have this checked and ruled out.
@danny95 & @susu2 I’m a type 1 diabetic since 1975. I’ve had lots of experience with hypoglycemia over the years but I haven’t heard of reactive hypoglycemia. I have had chronic sinus issues all my life but never made any connection between the two conditions. @susu2, a glucomemter is a blood sugar testing device. You can buy them over the counter and you will also need a lancing device, lancets, and test strips. The test strips are expensive, but the rest of the gear is cheap. Depending on your insurance coverage, it may be better to get a prescription from your Dr. An endocrinologist would be all over that. If you need to find one, you might need a referral from your primary physician. If you use a larger health system that has multiple specialties, you could check there under endocrinologists.
