Var122 I would be very interested in hearing how you are doing a year after your cmc joint arthroplasty? I have alot of pain at the base of my thumb and have had 4 steroid injections that help mildly. I have an appointment with the surgeon in a month and hope to have surgery soon. Thanks for any information you can give me postoperatively! Theresa

Hi @maiby5 - Just wanted to welcome you to Connect! I'm curious whether the pain limits what you can do with your hands? I had a thumb injury last fall and I was amazed at how many activities I had to change or curtail while it healed. Wishing you the best with your surgeon visit. Please keep us posted.

I have Stablyx implants in both thumbs. My right thumb was done 10-6-17 & the left was done 2-6-18. I have had great results. I was in a splint for about 3 weeks and then exercises on my own at home. I occasionally get some stiffness and mild pain in my right thumb if I over use it. I am not sure if that is normal or if it is because I have autoimmune inflammatory arthritis.

I am now 2.5 months out from Stablyx joint replacement in my left thumb. It has been a tough recovery but now it's going well. I had nerve damage that is healing without medication and my thumb doesn't hurt at rest like it used to. Every day I can do more and more. It's still tight but improving and I plan to try playing tennis again likely in another month or so.

I still have pain 🙁 I think it's due to the carpal bones near the cmc joint having arthritic changes. I had a cortisone shot at the beginning of January '19 with minimal relief. I am back to taking Aleve twice daily to help with pain & keep inflammation at bay. I'm not sure what I'm going to do next, but will try conservative measures for now....I have at least 19 more years of work. I changed jobs so that I can manage my pain better. Not the sunny report I would have liked to have given 🙁

I just had the surgery 2 days ago and am in Excruciating pain and my doctor is not addressing it. Is it normal to have this level of pain after a 24 hour nerve block wears off. Only taking 1 5mg Oxycodone every 6 hours (Along with a rotation of Tylenol and ibuprofen)? I’m miserable.

I had a regional block with sedation for the procedure & an ON-Q Pain Pump placed at the time of the block. I was very comfy for the procedure. I was told the block should last about 20 hrs & the pain pump would help with pain management for 2 days post op. Unfortunately, my block started wearing off 3 hrs after the procedure & the pain pump didn't help. So, when I noticed the block first starting to wear off (around 12:30pm), I took Tylenol & my Rx pain reliever, I'm sure it helped somewhat, but ended up have to take more Rx pain about 1 hour thereafter.
I was in a lot of pain the first day & was surprised on how much pain I did have being that the pain pump was there & I maxed out on Tylenol & Rx pain reliever! Thankfully, the first 48 hrs were the worst!! By day 3, I was fairly comfortable with minimal Rx pain reliever. By Post op day 5, I wasn't even taking Tylenol.
I'm 1 week out today & virtually pain free. I have some discomfort after the cast was placed, but not enough to take anything at all.
My biggest recommendation would be to elevate & ice as much as possible for the first few days, and stay ahead of the pain with the prescribed medications.
I though I was going to be "good" as I started pain meds when I first felt the initial block wearing off. I did call my care provider in regards to my pain several hours after my surgery & she said that what I was feeling is "bone pain" & sounded fairly normal.

Is a pain pump standard? I just had the surgery done and am in excruciating pain and cannot seem to find if this is typical?? Help.

@hnbmomof3, @var122, @lioness. As I recall this was a painful surgery. I had the tried and true anchovy surgery where they remove the thumb joint and replace it with a ligament harvested from your wrist. I too was miserable. My salvation was ice. They forgot that I lived at 6000 ft up on a mountain. The bandages became way too tight. I had to go back to the surgeon and have it refitted. And they gave me Percocet trying to be helpful. i just vomited......my sensitivity to opioids is pretty conclusive. Now you can use medical cannabis.
It is awful to be in unrelenting pain. May you begin to be free of suffering tonight. Chris

I had a pain pump which continued the nerve block for about 3 extra days. Why all facilities don't use them is beyond me. Meds are your friend and there is an uptake to get you to a tolerable level. Stay consistent with the meds. The pain is excruciating and quite normal. It does get better.
