B-6 vitamin danger!

Posted by Lynsorensen @lynsorensen, Dec 11, 2017

With the assistance of a neurologist at Mayo Clinic, I have almost completely eliminated the uncontrolled muscle spasms now. First and foremost: beware of taking multi-vitamin capsules that have B6 listed. B-6 overdosage (which is contained in every multivitamin I found in stores and on the internet) can cause loss of muscle control and spasms in some people. So can gluten found in many foods so now I am also gluten free. I now work out with a personal trainer 3 days a week and do water aerobics another 2 days. Got off gabapentin and also clonazepam. Using CBD oil capsules each morning (no more opioids or chemicals) and using a CBD topical ointment to rub on my leg muscles each night. He says I don't need him anymore! And I don't. No more shaking or muscle cramps or pain. Still a little numbness but that is receding also.

Hi @sunnyflower I understand you don’t each much. Don’t forget whether to take supplements or not depends on the foods you consume. I also eat vey little too but I make sure the foods I do eat are of substance. I found vitamins and minerals have offered very little benefits for me because I get them through my food. Some of your foods purchased at the grocery store may be fortified. Look at the labels to determine if vitamins and/or minerals have been added. For a deficiency in a vitamin and/or mineral a supplement may help otherwise too much is not good either for your body. I have found for me the natural way is best. I know some people don’t have the proper digestive system needed for vitamins or minerals to be absorbed but if you digest the supplements then you do. So be careful. Best of luck. Toni

Hey there Toni, good to hear from you. How are you doing? I so hope you're on top of your pain? Of course the natural way is best! I used to do that back in the day. Now I'm in way too much pain and am so weak, that I can't do much in the kitchen. I eat yogurt, blueberries and 1/4 slice of avocado and 1/2 protein shake for b'fast. Then have an entire bag of either green beans or artichoke hearts for lunch about 4-5pm. Then 4 oz. When I'm salmon or Chicken breast w/ maybe 4oz. of squash for dinner. 2 or 3 apples is desert every night. That's my treat. When I'm not trying to lose a few pounds, I will have more. I didn't realize it but in the 3 years I lost so much weight intentionally, I didn't have bread so I know I need to incorporate grains in my diet. We usually try to buy fresh, whole and organic when possible. Thanks so much for you advice. I'm forever learning! Warmest wishes, Sunnyflower

Hi @sunnyflower glad to hear you are eating well. Is this a new diet for you? One word of advice is to look at the protein powder to see all the nutrients it provides. If you can, besides grains, you may want to add nuts. They both add minerals to your diet. Also be aware some require other nutrients for better absorption. For example iron needs vitamin C. I believe the presence of coffee will negate the absorption of milk. Not all yogurts are the same. The flavored ones contain too much sugar. If I bought any flavored yogurts I would also buy plain yogurt and mix the two to make it less sweet. I make my own and don’t buy yogurt anymore. Now less sweet brands have become available at the grocery stores. I stay away from the fake sweeteners like sucralose. Seems so much of our food has this ingredient. No matter our ailments, on our own we have to keep learning through trial and error in order to make our health better, so keep trying. Remember God will help those who help themselves. Take care. Thx Toni. Good info! I eat Dannon Lite and Fit Blueberry and put blueberries in it. Also 1/4 of an avacado for fat to help the vitamin D assist the calcium absorption. And so on. Take special care as you demonstrate toward me! 😊🌹🙏

Hi @sunnyflower I remember you saying you also took the ALA supplement which gives you the burning side effect in your GI system. Apparently that is a common side effect of the supplement. You had thought it was heart burn you were experiencing. Have you resolved the burning? Hope you are feeling better. Toni

Who is the neurologist at Mayo that specializes in B6 toxicity?

@drb02r Welcome to Mayo Clinic. You will see that I did move your question to an ongoing discussion about the danger of B-6. You can click on view and reply from your email to navigate to the conversation.
As far as finding a physician at Mayo, you can definitely go to http://www.mayoclinic.org and select "find a doctor" in the upper right hand corner. Or perhaps someone in this conversation has seen a Mayo Neurologist that they can recommend.
@drb02r, can you tell us a little more about your situation? Were you diagnosed or just having symptoms?

Not me , but my son. He's been sick for over a year. SFM from the B6 toxicity and on going symptons .He's been in the Coast Guard 15 years. Never sick until a year ago.
He can't function like this. He is in the Mayo system, but the Drs he has seen just want to treat symptoms. He hasn't gotten a diagnosis to this day. We just need to find out what is going on. Muscle twitches, headaches, ringing ears, pain in joints, brain zaps, muscles spasms, gastrointestinal problems. He needs help figuring this out and can't seem to find a Doctor that really wants to investigate. Read that Mayo has a lot of info on B6 toxicity, but the Dr he saw did not. Just looking for the neurologist that does!!

I take pyridoxal-5-phosphate which is very effective at preventing the damage from AGEs (Advanced Glycation End Products). I get 37.5 mg twice per day in Life Extension’s Two Per Day supplement. I take one with my early meal and one with the evening meal. I also take a 100 mg cap of pyridoxamine-5-phosphate in between these two meals. This is within the safety range. I take this along with carnosine, alpha-lipoic-acid, and Benfotiamine to prevent AGEs and I also eat a diet low in AGEs. Diabetes is accelerated aging as a result of the excess glycation of proteins and lipids so it’s best, in my opinion, to have a safe and effective approach to preventing the damage caused by diabetes. Here is a very simple article about eating a diet low in AGEs. http://www.diabetesforecast.org/2014/11-nov/foods-high-in-ages.html
