I think it took a few days to really start working. When I substituted the Trazodone for Ambien, I was still taking .25 Xanax. at bedtime. I gradually weaned off the ambien. No side effects from Trazodone. I still take the Trazodone nightly with no other sleep aids. Usually I sleep through the night.

@sndishpr
I have been on 5 mg of Ambien for as long as I can remember probably 10 before that I’m 81 years old. I’m only getting four hours of sleep on Ambien and I think it’s making me feel sick. I just am not getting enough sleep and I feel awful. I’m supposed to try trazodone now but I’m also on 0.25 Xanax at night which the Psychiatrist told me to stop and I’ve been on that a long time and I know it’s not a good idea to stop these things abruptly. I really don’t know if she’s that smart but it sounds like you went through what I have to do so thanks for your post.
