Anyone else suffering from itching while taking levothyroxine?

Posted by lilyann @lilyann, Oct 21, 2025

lilyann here, anyone else suffering while taking levothyroxine? i have read where some of the fillers could be causing the problem. i am still fatiqued with no let up and again was reading where that is the normal thing to be fatiqued while on it. sad news is: just shows how important your thyroid gland is. so wishing everyone wellness. god bless.

@lilyann I had been taking Synthroid, the brand name, for years till a generic came on the market and my pharmacist switched me to that (as is required by our government run health plan). I had side effects with generic Levothyroxine and asked to go back to Synthroid. I have to pay a bit more, but it was worth the extra cost to me ( about $8 more than my co-pay amount of $3).

The problem with generic levothyroxine is that it is made in many different factories by many different companies. So the doses aren’t exactly the same, the fillers are different. I agree, if you can afford the slightly higher cost of synthroid, it’s often worth it

Hi. I also have hypothyroidism Hashimoto thyroid . Due to over dosage i entered in hyperthyroid and had 2 months itching. I stopped taking it and itching stopped . After 1 moth i stared talking just half of initial dosage 25 and after 1 month itching started again . My ft4 is ok tsh is fluctuating around 7-8 but i decided to stop again 1 week and reduce dosage to 12.5 .As i have a chart of evolution on tsh/dosage ft4 and creatine with anchor dates at about 2 months and 1 month distance . Maybe you should have your tsh more often . I also sufer from diabeties type 2 atrial fibrillation thrombosis and hipertensive

@ulise11 welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. Please be careful with dose changes of your thyroid medication. Your blood levels need to be monitored by the prescribing provider so that s/he can make the best recommendations regarding treatment for your thyroid condition. This is especially important when you have other conditions and treatments that may interact like your diabetes, atrial fibrillation and hypertension. Do you have a provider to help you manage all this?
