I need advice about my husband diagnosed esophageal cancer stage 4. He was diagnosed in September. Almost made it to get his port in and PET scan when the tumor wrapped around his spinal cord and paralyzed him and he had to have major surgery on his back with titanium rods and pins and cement. now he’s in Rehab waiting to get stronger and his back can heal so he can start chemo, but it’s already spread to his hip, which he found out in September and it’s spread to his chest lobes and his back. I’m just curious has anybody else trying to get chemo and being a wheelchair at the same time? my heart is so heavy and I’m devastated . This is the hardest thing I ever go through with him. I have strength and I believe he can be cured. I just don’t know if he’ll ever walk again. It’s only been two weeks since his surgery but hopeful.

@mecro, you and your husband have had to face a lot of tough news and challenges in such a short period of time. I can only imagine how devastating this all is and to see you husband suffer.

It sounds like they will start chemotherapy once his health status and body is strong enough after surgery. Chemo should be able to be delivered to someone in a wheelchair if it is not possible or comfortable to be transferred into the special chemo infusion chair.

How is he doing with the recovery from surgery? How are you doing?

He is in rehab on his final week. He has learned how to transfer from wheelchair to bed and from bed to commode use in physical therapy and occupational therapy, but this is very hard on his back and he is in a lot of pain and never goes away. He will be home on Friday and I am very nervous cause I don’t know how to do everything and I’m very overwhelmed and I have fought very hard to get the things that he needs for this. He is going to have a pet scan on Friday too and then he will have his portal put in the following week. He cannot sit in a chair for very long, so I’m very concerned about him getting treatments and how he’s going to respond, but I have a lot of faith and I pray to God every day and I give it to him and I just live day-to-day knowing that he’s going to get better but he might walk someday thank you for reaching out to me
