Experiences with hernia

So, according to my pcp I probably developed an inguinal hernia. Before my rarp I was told that this risk would be negligible 🙄.

If this happened to you, could you share your experience? Did you get surgery? How did you find a good surgeon? Thanks!

Yup, been there, done that. This is actually quite common and I found “the guy” who does this surgery in our area. The surgery was uneventful though he did use the mesh solution due to my prostrate cancer. Modest recovery of 1 week light lifting and no golf. Then onward. Another reminder to get to the gym every day and build or retain muscle in stomach and back.

@begreat99 Thanks! So you were told to have someone specialized in surgery of posr RARP hernias?

No, I just found the best in the area who specializes in this surgery. Our prostrate related issue is common for an expert.

Had RALP in June 2023 at age of 80 by 'eminent' prostate surgeon at Methodist in Houston. No discussion made of hernia potential. In 2025 began noticing bulging and some pain and PCP sent me to local surgeon who confirmed hernia and possibly two, each side. Had robotic hernia repair Nov. 2025, age 82 with mesh. No complications and uneventful recovery. Even though 'eminent' Houston prostatectomy surgeon never mentioned this possibility I did research on-line and found that not unusual and there is a higher occurrence of hernia in RALP patients and that a particular procedure was suggested to reduce the chance. I do not know lf my RALP surgeon used this technique or not. Had I had this information in advance I certainly would have discussed it with the RALP surgeon but probably would not have changed my decision for RALP.

My perinium was damaged by my (excellent) RALRP. About a year later, part of my bowel had partially descended into my scrotal sac. I had another robot-assisted hernia repair with mesh 15 months later in an outpatient procedure (also painless) that cured the problem. Another non-event; they gave me pain killers for when I went home, but I never needed them.
