Could This Be From the Hip?

Posted by jcaesar @jcaesar, 6 days ago

My wife suffers intense pain in her R leg as shown. The usual source of this type of pain would be from spinal stenosis of the L4. However, the most recent CT scan showed mild stenosis of the L4 but severe arthritis of the R hip. So the question then is, could the hip be causing this pain?

I had the same pain for months. Surgeon said stenosis and I needed surgery. I opted to try PT first. Completely fixed the pain. When I feel the same tightness and pain coming back I do the exercises that were prescribed and it works like a charm!

It's great to hear that something as non-invasive as PT could have effected a cure - she did try PT a year ago, and after 10 rounds of treatment, gave it up as it did nothing.

Sometimes would be a great improvement in my wife's case. Hers is constant and there's no position, vertical, horizontal or in between, where she can find relief. And here's another unbelievable fact - she takes 2 mg of hydrocodone (reportedly 2X as potent as morphine) before bed and it has zero effect. I thought morphine was the last word in pain killers. Here we have something twice as powerful and zip - nothing.

@jcaesar could be the pressure caused on the hip floor which causes nerve pain down the leg.
Pain meds do not work for nerve pain. Ask your doctor for what may work for her after testing to show it sis nerve pain.

@slmoore0626, can you relay exactly which exercises helped and how long before you find relief. Thanks

The way I understand it, is that stenosis is a narrowing through a nerve passage. What structures cause narrowing in hip stenosis? I would be interested in seeing this diagrammatically or anatomically.

@jcaesar I am not a dr. but it is my understanding that the sciatic nerve runs near the hip , sometimes running through the hip, causing pain.
