Reclast Infusion today 10/23/26 at 8am - so far so good at 1:30pm

Posted by susanjohnston @susanjohnston, Oct 23 3:18pm

I followed the advice on this forum and hydrated intensively for three days prior to the infusion. I took Tylenol one hour prior to the 8am infusion and a generic Claritin immediately following. My infusion nurse (Nicole at UCI in Irvine, CA at the new facility on Jamboree) was wonderful and made the whole experience stress-free. My Rx order was for 20 minutes - she obtained permission to have it take 30 minutes and apparently the saline flush before, during, and after is standard procedure. I feel fine and am continuing to intensively hydrate and take Tylenol every six hours for the next few days. I will post an update if I experience any of the following possible side effects: “Bone aches and other flu-like side effects from a Reclast (zoledronic acid) infusion start within 1 to 3 days (often within 24 to 48 hours) after receiving the medication.” Hoping that I can avoid any of these symptoms. I completed a year of Evenity monthly shots last month without any adverse side effects.

So happy for you that it has gone well so far. Following that protocol was the best thing you could have done. Please keep us posted.

Update: The day of the Reclast infusion went very well. No symptoms. The next day was a different story. I experienced extreme fatigue and some light -headedness. I stayed in bed all day and did not want to eat. The following day (today) I am back to normal, thank goodness!

@susanjohnston While you did end up with a reaction, I am grateful it wasn't any worse than it was. I hope the protocol you followed helped minimize the acute phase reaction you experienced. So many patients are not informed about appropriate preparation for the Reclast infusion. There is definitely need for improvement in that category. I was lucky that my endocrinologist was an informed doctor who also did not believe in short infusion times. I hope you continue to do well. Thank you for updating us!

Thank you for sharing your experience with Reclast. I will have my second infusion in February and plan to follow same protocol. I did not know about this before my first infusion and I had 3 weeks of discomfort (not extreme, but definitely more than moderate).
I will be 73 when I have the second infusion. I am healthy, active and not overweight. May I ask your age?

I am 81 and will be 82 in November. Do you happen to know your doctor's plan for how many more infusions you will have?

I do believe she is planning a second infusion Feb/March 2027. She did tell me that she will evaluate my bone density scan after the 2nd infusion.
I know I'm in for a rough couple of weeks after this next infusion, but this time I will be hydrating and taking Alieve and or Claritan as others have suggested. I'm also going to ask my doctor for a 30 minute infusion rather than the 15 they prescribed, and if I can have a lower dose as others have suggested.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience!
