Could This Be From the Hip?
My wife suffers intense pain in her R leg as shown. The usual source of this type of pain would be from spinal stenosis of the L4. However, the most recent CT scan showed mild stenosis of the L4 but severe arthritis of the R hip. So the question then is, could the hip be causing this pain?

I have bad arthritis in my right hip, and it does sometimes cause radiating pain down my leg... Don't know if that's helpful

The way I understand it, is that stenosis is a narrowing through a nerve passage. What structures cause narrowing in hip stenosis? I would be interested in seeing this diagrammatically or anatomically.

Sometimes would be a great improvement in my wife's case. Hers is constant and there's no position, vertical, horizontal or in between, where she can find relief. And here's another unbelievable fact - she takes 2 mg of hydrocodone (reportedly 2X as potent as morphine) before bed and it has zero effect. I thought morphine was the last word in pain killers. Here we have something twice as powerful and zip - nothing.
I am so sorry to hear that. Pain sucks. Can she sleep?
jcaesar, the knee and the hip share common nerve pathways. Is there any reason the knee has escaped suspicion. Can you describe the pain. Is it dull and constant. Is there any position or activity during which the pain worse. Are there less dominant pain symptoms elsewhere.
I had the same pain for months. Surgeon said stenosis and I needed surgery. I opted to try PT first. Completely fixed the pain. When I feel the same tightness and pain coming back I do the exercises that were prescribed and it works like a charm!

4 ReactionsI had severe back and hip pain before scoliosis surgery. I did have 2 injections in the hip which helped enormously. But the hip doc said the major pain was from the back, so I should address that first. Since 17 vertebrae fusion 2 years ago, I have had very minor hip pain. However, he said I did not have arthritis in the hip but have labral tears in the hip. Apparently, he does surgery for labral tears rarely, that arthritis is the main reason for hip surgery. Labral tears are common and most people live with them.

The knee has escaped suspicion since, by itself there's no pain at all in the knee. It's all in the shin below the knee. No, it's not dull, it's very sharp and while not constant, it is there, in varying degrees, all of the time. There's no time when she's completely pain free. Although not always the case, sitting is generally worse, while moving around helps. As to less dominant pain symptoms, it's the R hip but that's definitely the lesser pain as compared to the agony of the anterior shin.

It's been forever since she enjoyed a normal 8 hours. At the best of times, it's a 4 hour stretch and that's with 2 pills of hydromorphone (1mg). Unbelievably, in most instances, the hydro has 0 effect.
