@sjde It did not boil down to one test. He had a very difficult psych test and flew thru it which I had predicted and I told his physician ( the psychiatrist who deals with dementias in older people) that I predicted he would so please don't do the "what is the month....who is the president thing...." When he finished that exam, I was called in for an interview with husband. My husband showed his change of personality and the psychologist told him he needed to learn to treat people better......I'm sure my husband felt like a cornered dog baring his teeth and growling....embarrassed too......On the way out I notice the psychologist was watching us....and my husband started with the "I'm not doing any of that stuff. only peppered with expletives :).." I just kept walking with him. He calmed down. Prior to that I had written his pcp a letter stating my concerns and hand delivered it. My husband did not want me to go to next visit with him. I said, "if your dr does not want me to be there I will wait in waiting room." He calmed down. And dr. welcomed me.
It is too much to explain here but I went through many steps. At one point I had to call the psychiatrist because he was "ridiculous" again and he had me see if I could convince him to take an increase in meds with the understanding that if he would not would /could he give him something else (prescribe) to calm him. Looking back I do believe he was still fighting the Dx of MCI. He has calmed down and remained stable. Will he get worse? I do not know. I keep a log (diary) of stuff he does (unusual for him) and present the facts to the doctor as appropriate. So far so good. I think he has begun to see that he isn't like he once was but he would never admit that to me. I don't have all the answers.....I only hope that by telling my story it may help or help guide you.
