Anyone on Floxfox have to take Filgrastim to boost white blood cells?

Posted by katieparkin @katieparkin, Sep 30 8:57am

Hi,

I am finishing cycle 5 of 8 folfox today. I had to take Filgrastim shots a couple weeks ago to boost my neutrofilos. They are low again, need to take even more injections to prepare for next time. Has anyone had a similar situation? Thankyou

@katieparkin, it is not uncommon for white blood cell counts to decrease to a point of needing a boost to continue treatment. Filgrastim injection is used to treat neutropenia (low white blood cells) that is caused by cancer medicines. It is a synthetic (man-made) form of a substance that is naturally produced in your body called a colony stimulating factor. Filgrastim helps the bone marrow to make new white blood cells.

How are you doing with filgrastim and chemo?

Claritin (allergy medicine) will alleviate bone pain associated with medications used to boost white blood cells.
While being treated (folfox) at NYU Langone I was given the single injection version and the next two days I experienced excruciating bone pain…mainly in my pelvis.
My oncologist said Claritin wasn’t a “recognized or standard” treatment for this type of bone pain, so be sure to ask your doctor before taking.
Best of luck!

@colleenyoung hi, I haven’t been on here much. Do just seeing this, I really want to thankyou for your interest and thoughtful reply.
I have another topic, question about folfox and my low blood counts and I don’t know if I should post it here or new thread? I was doing great with it all until after cycle 6 (out of 8)
Thanks Katie
(I found where to start a new discussion and so posted a longer version there, hope someone sees it and can help me understand more) 🙏

Thanks.

@sam7here hi, sorry for late reply. It’s been been a whirlwind.
I can relate to all that. Ai actually am up against something else daunting. I have very low platelets that’s stopping me from finishing my last two cycles atm. Plus I don’t want it interfering wuth surgery in a couple months. I’m a worrier. That was not a typo for warrior.
Thanks if you reply. 🙏
