achilles tendonitis at insertion

Posted by sharonope @sharonope, Oct 4 1:35pm

Diagnosed 3 mo. ago with "achilles tendon fasciitis at insertion " , after experiencing 1 mo. back of heel burning pain sometimes radiating up achilles tendon. Using Voltaren salve & wearing a heel lift. Very slow improvement. Suggestions?

sharonope (@sharonope) - The worst that could happen is a rupture. And that is very, very bad. Did I mention that would be bad?
I don't know if the doctor who diagnosed you was a podiatrist, but I would strongly suggest seeing one. Tendonitis requires rest, too, and he or she will need to monitor it. If you haven't had one already, the podiatrist will likely want an MRI. Physical Therapy will probably be ordered at some point.

Wishing you a speedy recovery and pain-free walking.

@uisge Yes, he is a podiatrist. I'm a nurse & am aware of the worst. Yikes!! Am seeing him again & expect PT to me next step. Thanks for your input.

@sharonope - You're way ahead of most folks who've ever had that problem, what with your profession and already seeing the right kind of specialist. My right Achilles had nodules and calcification and was very painful.. my surgeon told me it could have ruptured. To clean it up, he had to detach it and re-attach after removing all that stuff. The recovery is real drag, too, lengthy and painful, and the phys therapy is a must. I had torn tendons in both rotator cuffs and had P.T. first, but it didn't turn out well- you can't rehab fragile tendons with tears... multiple ruptures in both (antibiotic casualties).
Good luck with your P.T. - if it becomes overly painful or too much (you're aware, so you'll know), it might not be the right thing at that time.

Nothing like first hand experience. I'm sorry for what you've gone through. I'm curious as there was no type of injury. for me. It just started with a mild burning pain that got worse. I shall be vigilant & and advocate for myself. That's what I used to tell patients. "Work with the doc as you know yourself best". Now days docs do listen. Back when I started nursing in the early 60s neither patient nor nurse questioned.

Consider a medical cause and ask for an arthritis screen lab panel.
My Psoriatic arthritis started at the Achilles tendon.

I just read about your "journey". WOW! There are so many drugs out there to treat some really serious diseases but the side effects can be brutal. What were they treating? Did they find cause for your polyarthritis? Groin pain down leg is usually hip so I hope that's better. I have osteoarthritis as well & occ. get a rheumatoid panel as my Mom had RA . Damn those autoimmune diseases. We really have to be careful about what we take for what & the less the better; but if there's something that "should" help, it's usually worth a try. I'm one that if there is a side effect~ I'll probably have it. You may be too. Ibuprofen & Tylenol combo pretty much takes care of my joint, ect. pains. I'm almost 81 & we "geriatrics react differently, as well. Keep on keepin' on, question, question, question & definitely get 'anecdotal' reactions documented. I've done a lot of research on collagen and narrowed it down to 'Native Path Collagen Peptides'. It's well reviewed, not too spendy & I take 20 gm /da. as I have severe osteoporosis; probably from omeprazole for too long & no D3 supp. while living in N. latitudes plus heredity.

@sharonope oh, you also read about the Clindamycin problem in that other thread? ugh, not a fun journey (and I know what fun is 'coz I've had it before and this ain't it!)
You have just a few years on me.. I'm on the Ibuprofen and Tylenol bus, too. My cousin and both her children have R.A., she did family research and found out it came in through our mutual grandmother's bloodline, her sister had it. My tests have been negative but I still get that checked regularly. thanks for reminding me- it's time to have that test done again.
The infection I had several courses of flouroquinolones for was sinuses and cellulitis in my face... finally went to an ENT for persistent earache and found out I had a badly diseased and infected Parotid gland. He removed 80-85% of that, couldn't get it all without cutting more face nerves. so that's all taken care of. The Clindamycin was for an open fracture of a finger I crushed in my car door.
You're right about how us 'over-60's ' set react to stuff, I didn't know that until I learned it.
I will take your advice, thank you for it.
Keep on taking care of yourself, and keep on keepin' on! 🙂
