Crow boots or BKA?

My med team: here. Go from custom lightweight AFOs on both feet (which still have their issues)to this anchor -like crow boot on both feet

Crow boot wearers online: I wish I had never done this. Just cut off your foot.

Who do I believe? I feel like I am facing a massive downgrade by wearing a crow boot with no measure able benefits.

Is there any hope? Or is it better to just chop my feet off and move on with my life?

For reference i have charcot in BOTH feet. Have been in carbon fiber AFOs since 2025. Doc wants both feet in crow boots but is willing to leave driving for in afo for now to preserve independence

What are crow boots and what do they look like? I wear the Billy shoe which zippers along the side and around the toe. I have dropped feet as well as neuropathy so I wear AFOs on both my feet. This shoe allows me to just step into it with ease and my toes are all comfortable and not cramped up in the shoe.

Crowboots are for Charcot Foot. Its basically a big plastic (i think plastic?) cast. The bones in your feet basically break down, disintegrate, the arch collapses into a rocker bottom and your foot can become severly disfigured which can lead to amputations. The crowboot holds your foot together to heal as much as it can. I dont see much posted about here despite the fact it can be caused by neuropathy and diabetic neuropathy in particular as it can be known as diabetic foot. Its a different condition than Charcot Marie Tooth which is a hereditary neuropathy.

Thank you for explaining this to me. I’m sure I’m not the only one who has never heard of this. I have dropped feet but that doesn’t even compare to what the problems would be with a Charcot Foot.

I had no clue what neuropathy, charcot foot, CMT or drop foot was until I was diagnosed with neuropathy and started reading up on it. I wish I could go back to when I never knew about any of this. All horrible conditions.
