Golf and prostate cancer
Hi, everyone. Brand new to the site. I was just diagnosed was prostate cancer, mostly G7 and benign samples but one G9 biopsy. I wanted to start with something light-hearted. I play a lot of golf and if my condition leads to a radical prostatectomy, will I be able to play golf again without major incontinence risk. My fear is that everytime I would swing to take a shot, I would pee all over my pants (protected with pads of course). Anyone play?

My decipher
Score was .56 so I believe that is an intermediate aggressiveness. ArteraAI was very low suggesting no need for ADT. My RO (at a COE) believes I have microscopic cancer in the prostate bedcthat di not travel since nothing showed up on the PET scan or MRI if the prostate bed.

Gleason 4+3 Decipher .62. At what point did they consider it a BCR before they wanted to begin treatment? Thanks
I play. Had prostatectomy several years ago with high risk PCa. The experience of the surgeon is important. I was back out on the course within 90 days. Very minor leakage for a short period of time. Best. Tom

My psa went from .07 in December 2025 to .128 in May of 2026. My RO from a COE that based on my original Gleason of 3+4 and the fact that it took 5 years to get to .128 that I could wait until it got to .2 or even .5 before Radiatikn treatment but I insisted on Early Salcage Radiation (which is when the psa is between .1 and .2). I’ve read that the results of a cure are higher when Radiation is performed before the psa gets to .2!
Hey I had RARP 11 months ago and I play golf at least once per week. I wear a light pad during the day, none at night and a heavier pad for golf since I try to swing out of my shoes :). Good luck with your journey - I wish you the best.

Agreed. Recent studies and extensive research seem to conclude the earlier, the better when it comes to salvage radiation. Makes sense to attempt to catch it before it has time to spread.
Thanks for your reply.

I have been told by my RO at KUMC that is a center of excellence for PC that starting salvage radiation after rising to .1 is their standard.
@diverjer
That is great! 5 years ago when I had my RP, the standard was BCR at .2, 2 PSA’s a month apart. How quickly the technology changes, etc.

I think I feared the catheter more than the surgery but in my case and I suspect for most others it was completely manageable.
I used a leg bag even at night, I'd empty just before bed and when I woke with no issues. During the day I sat in a chair or laid in a bed or couch. In the evenings I slept in a bed. For the 8 days I had mine I went outside to walk.
It didn't hurt although you know and have a sensation it's there, once removed it felt fantastic to feel untethered.
I didn't mind the catheter much at all, the worst part was all the cleaning. I had a leg bag for daytime and did pretty much all I wanted, no one would even know I had it. At night had a bigger bag I hooked on bed side and slept all through the night not getting up once. Now (5 mo after PR) I am getting up 3 times a night and wearing a depends shield. Still getting 1 - 4 ML weight added to it during sleeping, feels dry, but the weight still increases 1 - 4 ML a night. Sometimes wonder if some of it is sweat?
